Since this short book is not meant to be an all-encompassing biography of Martha Washington, you may want to know about her life and times. To help you with this, there are several good references at the end of this book. I have also provided a Timeline, in order to link together the important events in the life of Martha Washington, and a section of the book titled Biographical Sketches,
which includes brief biographies of some of the key individuals in the book. In the text, those individuals who are in one of the biographical sketches will have their name in bold print the first time they appear in the book.

If you are married to or the offspring of a very famous person your accomplishments are often eclipsed by the more famous one. This was truly the case for Martha Washington, wife of President George Washington, who was perhaps the most well-known man in the world during his era. But does Martha truly deserve the back seat of history? Probably not! Most of the pictures we see of her were painted during her advanced years, looking like a kindly grandmother ready to bake cookies.
