    Empty Dreams - Tracilyn George

    HURRICANE

    Cold freezing rain

    Splashes against the window.

Harsh winds crash the defenseless glass.

    Friendless black clouds

Take control of the dark sky.

    Stripped trees swing

    Their naked branches furiously.

    Leaves, brown and withered,

    Swirl evilly on the ground.

Birds huddle together, frightened and cold.

    Squirrels scurry to find shelter

    Against the storm.

    Almost instantly, it intensifies,

    Throwing branches at everything.

    Angry and fierce,

    Its wrath upon all

    For no reason apparent.

    Its purpose unknown,

    Destruction its only defense,

    Leaving many dead

    Injured

    And stranded,

    With nowhere to go

    And nowhere to turn.

    SHADOWS

    Lurking in every

    Nook and cranny,

    They’ll sneak up

    On you so quietly.

    In their blackened wake

    Hides evil and destruction.

    In their darkness,

    The deepest secrets are cloaked

    Waiting to prey

    On some unsuspecting victim

    As they crawl along

    Hanging on your every move

    Ready to strike

    With unrelenting force;

    No conscious to

    Give them second thoughts.

    All they see

    Is their life

    Being threatened by

    The existence of light.

    ASSAULT

    The girl stared coldly

    Into the forever whiteness.

    Her room had an almost

    Unbearable frigidness

    As shreds of torn sheets

    And ragged clothing

    Litter her cramped floor space.

    Her eyes were swollen

    Red and purple.

    Her face bruised so badly

    That her simple beauty

    Was hidden behind the blackness.

    Her features were indistinguishable

    Under this dark camouflage.

    The wind whistled wildly

    Through the ice covered window

    Freezing her tiny body.

    She shivered

    Weakly pulling her shawl

    Over her frail shoulders.

    She sidestepped past the mess

    Silently down the staircase

    Slipping through the front door

    Escaping to freedom

    From her barbaric stepfather.

    MIND GAMES

    Freezing rain pours

    Frozen sheets
