A BETTER TOMORROW
(This poem is based in the depression years)
The slam of the porch door signaled his return
Four sets of hungry eyes looked up from their play
His wife walks out from the kitchen to meet him
He stands there, broken, feeling unfit to be here
He looks and shakes his head; there will be not feed tonight
Again the work line out stripped the work available
Never had he seen so many outed from their jobs
Yet the pollies and the moguls get fatter off their profits and lies
He feels he has lost his desire; his wanting is stolen, stripped from his soul
Tonight his children will eat what meager crumbs they have left
For the third night he will not eat at all
He had set traps in the hope of something, but they had been stolen
Tomorrow he will reluctantly sell his and his wife’s wedding rings
After that there will be nothing left
She hands him a letter from the land lord
He doesn’t open it; he knows already that they are behind
Tomorrow he says to his wife, tomorrow will be better
With that he goes out to take a walk
She watches him leave, she sees the shattered man
That once walked full of a workers pride
She knows that they will pull through
Knows he will work again
For tomorrow is all ways a better day
