    My Sheep Know My Voice

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. ²⁸ I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. (Joh 10:27-28 NIV)

    Introduction

As a student of the Bible, there are events that are perplexing, both in the Old Testament (Tanakh) and in the New Testament (Messianic Writings). Some of these occurrences’ present challenges to our understanding of the Bible. These have been referred to as inconsistencies by biblical detractors who wish to devalue the Bible. Conversely, biblical proponents find ways to dove-tail biblical record to prove those detractors wrong. Over the centuries, many people have endeavored to either widen or close the interpretation gap of these challenges, depending on which tent they reside under.

As mentioned in a previous writing, Jesus of Nazareth is the most well-known figure in history. He is God to some, The Messiah, a prophet, a man to others, and then there are those that claimed he was insane¹. For myself, Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah, son of David, Son of God, but it is the insanity focus that prompts this writing. Was Jesus insane? Some biblical detractors have drawn attention to his mental state. What was the actual mental state of Jesus and more important, what is the mental state of the humanity he came to free? It is my intention to draw awareness to and compare the psychological status of Jesus vs that of humanity.

The word insane presents a state of mind that prevents normal perception, behavior, or social interaction. But what is sane social interaction? This writing will examine some human choices that undergird human social behaviors and the reasons driving those choices. It is important to think about our choices in life, evaluate them against our behaviors and determine what exactly our individual actions express about our personality, our soul, our existence. All this speaks to the social mindset of the humanity which we define as sane. Evaluation of our behavior is important to avoid hypocrisy and demonstrate some consistent, constructive, and beneficial outcome for our lives.

Unfortunately, this is not the case for mankind now and ever. Not only do we suffer substantially from hypocrisy but, it is my position that humanity exists in an undetectable bubble of insanity. This is evidenced by our social behaviors all throughout history. Over time, our societal structures have continued to conceal it magnificently as normal behavior. Please consider these thoughts by stepping back and seeing an insane world that has blinded humanity.

    The Importance of Listening

I believe that people want to be heard. They want to know that the other person, or people, who are hearing them will give them the courtesy, if not respect, to sincerely consider their information. Listening is a foundational element in true relationship and in knowing the voice of God. Are you a good listener? God is a great listener; He is always listening! Listening² is an important feature in the relationship equation and the importance of listening cannot be under stated. There is a biblical record about the prophet Jonah that demonstrates the case for listening. You know Jonah, he was the one swallowed by a big fish. Let me remind you: God, the God of Israel, was not happy with the people of Nineveh. Their actions were making God so unhappy that God decided to destroy their city. But due to God’s great compassion, God instructed Jonah to visit them to make them aware of this situation. It was God’s hope they would repent and avoid His judgment. Keep in mind that the people of Nineveh did not follow the God of Israel. Neither did they worship this God. They simply acted as if the God of Israel did not exist, and this fact is important. Jonah had no pity for the people of Nineveh. He
