King & Queen of OSE Mountain - Duane Arthur Ose
Prologue
Like all stories, there is a before the beginning. Summer of 1982 I was fortunate to explore Alaska. Here are some of the facts you might like to know about Alaska.
Alaska has four time zones but uses only one for convenience.
Less than 1 percent of the land is owned by the state.
Alaska is where men are men and so are the women.
Alaska has many temperate zones.
The last federal homesteader in America is Duane A. Ose and on the Federal Lake Minchumina Land Settlement Area in Alaska, October of 1986.
The Federal Homestead Act was first opened in 1862 and signed by the then President Abraham Lincoln. A second cousin of mine, Mike E. Ose, drove down from his home in Wasilla, Alaska, to Minnesota to visit. Mike then asked me to ride along with him back to Alaska, and at the end of summer, he would buy an airline ticket for me to fly back to Minnesota. At the two border crossings, Mike told me to have the honor of driving across them. Before the Alaska crossing while at a pullout before the border, I said to Mike, What’s the big woopy deal about me driving across a border?
Mike sheepishly replied, I do not have a driver’s license.
Apparently, Mike had a driver friend for the drive to Minnesota. Mike was a great host and drove me to a lot of places. I soon realized the rush of traffic was the same as every other state. But I yearned for the far off the grid land. So he began dropping me off at the edges of remote lands where I camped, hiked, and climbed mountains, where seldom people were and were only looked at from afar. One day, I was told that the Federal Homestead Act of 1862 had reopened December of 1982 just for two land settlement areas in Alaska; each were an area of 30,000 acres: the Lake Minchumina Federal Land Settlement, located north of Denali Mountain and about thirty miles northeast of the largest interior lake, Lake Minchumina. The other was the Solana District of 30,000 acres to the southeast by the town of Tok, near the border of Canada.
There are two FBL management offices in Alaska. One in Fairbanks, the other in Anchorage. Mike and went and visited the nearest one, the BLM Office in Anchorage. There I studied the pictures and all the surrounding land or terrain of each.
The Solana District was too close to a main highway, and to get there, I would have to cross native corporation land; it would be likened to trespassing. The timber was good and the lakes very attractive and inviting, but no hills to get above the cold or have solid soil in which to have a good garden or a view, only trees blocking any long-distance views. Lake Minchumina land settlement area was the remotest, high-ground, timber views of the Alaskan Mountain Range, five lakes, solid ground, no permafrost save for down by the glacial tundra ponds, six hundred feet below the hills that really caught my eye. I knew that living up high would mean good drainage and a warm climate. Also, the top of one hill looked like it could be made into an airfield; that would mean easier access to my future home, rather than being on boggy ground and swamp lands.
Already there were sixty-seven people that had filed; most filed on the shores of the tundra’s shallow muddy ponds. I picked up an application to file and the rules of what is called Proving Up in order to be approved and become owner of the claim. I also purchased a black and white spy satellite photograph that was taken from space, for $40.
To continue reading the time gap that leads up to the book, The King and Queen of Ose Mountain, I would like you to visit books on amazon.com and by looking under my name, Duane Arthur Ose. Order my books of my adventures in Alaska, plus, as of this writing yet to be published before this book, Rena’s Cookbook and Marriage of the Heart. Those books lead to the present book. All the books not pertaining to Alaska, you might like as well. I thank you. Now without further ado, I present, The King and Queen of Ose Mountain.

Hunt for the Perfect Match Begins
Thank you, Carol Le. You can read about Carol Le in the book Marriage of the Heart written by me. Days before Carol died of cancer, she made me promise to keep loving. To search for another to share life with and never be alone. God bless you, Carol Le.
My heart’s home is on Ose Mountain, Alaska, 145 air miles southwest of Fairbanks, Alaska. My federal homestead claim is only reachable by a bush plane. Besides that, my proving-up dwelling was one of the requirements in proving up to own, which in my case was a small 9 × 11 foot dugout that a young man, at age nineteen, Jeff Peterson and I made in 1986, read about this dugout in the book, Alaskan Adventure 2 and the other books that lead up to this one on amazonbooks.com. Search for the name of the author, Duane Arthur Ose.
