Chapter 1
The working environment
This chapter shows the OpenOffice WRITER working environment with its menu groups and different features.
1.1 Startup
As soon as OpenOffice application is installed on your computer, a menu appears offering different modules available (figure 1.1).
Figure 1.1: Starting the OpenOffice application.
The application possibilities are: word processing, spreadsheet, slides and database management, drawing tools and mathematical formulas. Inside each one, you can use the programming BASIC language to create macros.
When starting the word processing, you will see the main menu and ribbons, as shown in figure 1.2.
Figure 1.2: The ribbon and different menu options.
The following list details the different menu options.
File. These are classic features for opening, closing and creating a new document. You can save the files in the standard OpenDocument format .ODT but also in the Microsoft .DOC format. Be careful when converting an OpenOffice file to Word, the layout is not always exactly the same. You can also export data to PDF by specifying parameters via a dedicated dialogue box. Some of these are interesting, especially those that define the security of the PDF file. There is a wizard for making ready-to-use documents and other possibilities such as a document converter. Note the Create Master Document feature in the Send submenu. It enables you to split documents into several parts such as a title page, a cover page, a table of contents and several chapters. This structure is always organized with styles and facilitates automatic page numbering. OpenOffice WRITER also allows you to create document templates that can be managed via the Templates/Organize
