Chapter 1. Introduction to this Book
This small booklet describes the process of producing an e-book using the minimal markup language asciidoc. This booklet is aimed at technically able Linux users.
This is’t and Asciidoc tutorial there are loads of them on the WWW.
Asciidoc markup is basic text with some added annotations, or markup, to inform the asciidoc program how to do the final formatting of the text. Using plain text has many advantages over using a word processor:
There are no distractions from the process of writing and no decisions about formatting have to made at the time of writing.
Once the text is written it can be output to many different formats with no changes to the text itself.
It can be written on the simplest of text editors. Almost all devices have a text editor of some kind even if it’s an e-mail client. You could probably write a well formatted book just using an email client.
As I do not use any version of MS Windows or a Mac of any type so I cannot vouch for any method of doing this on a non-linux system. This book was of course produced using the methods described herein.
This is not going to appeal to writers that want to produce small manuscripts in a single format in something like MS-Word. This is not for you. Don’t read this and complain
