Kid Detectives Cattle Crooks - Ross Thompson
PART ONE
Qantas flight 304's front door slowly opened as the air hostess raised the lever. The heat rushed in. They had landed in Melbourne, Australia. Outside, the temperature was 42 degrees Celsius. It was Jason's first time inhaling warm air.
Jason Betelli had jumped at the chance to spend the summer vacation at his Uncle Jack's Cattle Station in Victoria, Australia. (Large cattle properties are known as Stations in Australia) He could bring two friends, and his Uncle would cover the cost of their air travel. Jason chose Luke Mills his closest friend, and Julie Kostas, the girl who had shared earlier adventures with them. In a letter to Julie's mother and Luke's parents, Uncle Jack assured them he would take diligent care of their children.
It had been a long flight, fourteen hours, with a stopover in Hong Kong and another in Dubai. All that was forgotten now, with the excitement of arriving in Australia.
Wow, Australia!
Jason was the first passenger out of the plane. Luke and Julie were hard on his heels. A backpack was all the luggage the kids had. Jason’s Uncle had advised only extra, warm weather clothes, and toiletries. He would supply everything else.
A ten-minute walk through the terminal brought them to the arrivals area, where friends and family of the passengers eagerly watched for them. A woman in jeans, riding boots, and a western shirt began waving at the kid’s as soon as they showed up. Alice. The manager of the Cattle Station and the daughter of Uncle Jack.
She rushed over to the three and asked, Luke, Julie, and Jason?
Yes,
Julie answered.
She shook Julie’s hand, then extended a hand to Luke. Jason
?
No, I’m Luke,
Luke replied. Alice shook his hand.
You must be Jason then?
she said turning to face
