Rose contemplated the last of the wine in her glass, before giving it a swirl and swallowing it down. She held the empty glass out to me with a smile and a shrug.

I’ve got no one waiting for me at home, so I might as well have another, right?

I laughed and opened another bottle. Rose was my best friend and had been since high school. I hadn’t seen her much since she had gotten divorced last year and had moved into a condo on the other side of town.

For the ten years before the divorce, she and her ex, Randy, had lived the next block over. We had moved into Tall Pines the same year, our houses almost identical. Randy and Rose had been our best couple friends, Randy and Rosie, Penny and Paul.
