#1 Sri Ramana defined the Self as being-consciousness-bliss, which is a single immanent reality that is simultaneously the source, the substance, and the real nature of everything that exists. He also referred to it as God, the Heart, and Brahman.
#2 The Self is the underlying reality that supports the appearance of other three temporary states. It is one's real and natural state of being. It is sometimes referred to as God, the Heart, and Brahman.
#3 The Self is your real form, your true nature, and it is always-present. You want to know yourself, and you want to see the Self as something new. But it is eternal and remains the same all along. You want to see it as a blazing light or vast. But it is not light or dark. It simply is. It cannot be defined.
#4 The Self is your real form, your true nature, and it is always-present. You want to know yourself, and you want to see the Self as something new. But it is eternal and remains the same all along.

Insights on Ramana Maharshi's Be As You Are
Contents
Insights from Chapter 1
Insights from Chapter 1
#1
The Self is the term that Sri Ramana used the most frequently to describe the same indivisible reality that everyone experiences. It is not an experience of individuality but a non-personal, all-inclusive awareness. The real Self is pure being, a subjective awareness of I am which is completely devoid of the feeling I am this or I am that.
#2
The experience of the Self is sometimes called jnana or knowledge. It is not an object of experience, nor is it an understanding of a state that is different and apart from the subject knower. It is a direct and knowing awareness of the one reality in which subjects and objects have ceased to exist.
#3
The Self is the reality that is present within every moment of consciousness. It is the awareness that remains when ignorance is destroyed along with the knowledge of objects. It is the radiance of pure awareness shining equally within and without.
#4
The state that transcends speech and thought is mouna. That which is, is mouna. How can mouna be explained in words. Sages say that the state in which the thought I does not rise even in the slightest is Self, which is silence. Only silence is God; everything else is trivial and petty.
#5
The Self is not something that can be realized. It is always there, existing beyond all of our thoughts and feelings. It is our very nature to be free from all bondage.
#6
You can see that the three states – wake, dream, and sleep – come and go, but you remain yourself in all of them. If you know that, the three states will not trouble you. You remain your own Self in all of them.
#7
The idea of the Self being the witness is only in the mind. Witnessing is relative to objects witnessed. The witness and his object are mental creations.
#8
The three states of waking, dream, and sleep cannot be real. They are simply the result of the mind. The real state, which exists alone, is consciousness. The other three are not real and so cannot be said to have a certain degree of reality.
#9
The three states are the mind, the body, and the world. They come and go, but they neither come nor go. The Self alone remains as it ever is. The three states owe their existence to non-enquiry and enquiry puts an end to them.
#10
The Self is real, but it is not separate from the phenomenal world. It is said to be different from the real and the unreal. Similarly, we speak
