About this ebook

Owen has never been to the royal city before, but with his family's farm fully barren in the ongoing drought, it's time for him to strike out on his own and see what opportunities the city may offer. A chance encounter with the Prince throws Owen headlong into the deep inner workings of castle life—which, he quickly learns, is full of secrets. It won't be long before Owen must make his choice: will he become the castle's next secret?

    Chapter One

Owen woke, for the third day in a row, to the wet, snuffling sound of a large pig investigating his body, presumably looking for scraps of food in his pockets.

Oi, Bessie, he complained, rolling away from her into the hay. Believe me, if I had any food in my pockets, I would have eaten it myself long ago. His stomach rumbled loudly, corroborating this claim.

Bessie snuffled, unimpressed, and turned away, shuffling into another corner of the small pen.

Owen sighed and stood. He was grateful to Bessie for tolerating his presence, and to her owners for allowing him to sleep in their pigpen. They'd also shared with him what little food they were able to spare. In exchange, they only asked Owen to shovel Bessie's shit, but he was determined to pay them back properly as soon as he could. Which would be just as soon as he found work, and after he'd sent some coin home to his own family. And after he'd repaid the several other generous families who'd aided him on his journey to the city.

It had been five days' travel on foot, and what little sustenance his mother had managed to pack for him had been stolen on the second night as Owen slept under a tree on the side of the road, apparently too exhausted to be roused by the pickpockets.

He couldn't even summon anger at the robbers—the drought was in its second year now, and the desperation it wrought was no longer limited to the poor farmers like Owen's family. The entire southern kingdom was starving.

Which is what brought Owen to the city, where somehow life seemed to go on. He'd quickly learned that things here weren't perfect, not by far—but royal wealth and protection meant that the city dwellers had help. Shipments of food from the north, where the rain had continued to fall, arrived weekly, and the townsfolk were able to purchase it with coin they earned doing work that encompassed more than simply growing one's own food to survive.

Owen was here to find just such work, although
