PREFACE

In 1991, I joined the services of one of Africa’s foremost banks. Our bosses handed over to all of us a short book called Manual of Procedure (MOP) with strict warnings to abide by the contents in our duties while in the organization.

Over many years, truly, I discovered that those who complied with guidelines in the MOP had great insights, many breakthroughs and turnarounds but those who either neglect, jettison or belittle the MOP had terminal problems.

My mind went to the MOP while writing this book.

Mastering of Problems (MOP) gives detailed synopsis/synthesis of problems, offer guidelines on how to manage life’s diverse, insipient and constant challenges, and be a master all the times.

INTRODUCTION

Mr. Ron Holland, a great man of wisdom wrote You can have anything you like in this life, I repeat, anything, provided it is not a life free of problems

Individuals, communities, organizations nations go through problems daily. Then, we need to know.

CHAPTER ONE

WHAT IS A PROBLEM?

The Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary defines a problem as a thing that is difficult to deal with or understand.

According to Dr. Robert Anthony, prominent psychologist, renowned lecturer and best selling author in his book ‘How To Make The Impossible Possible’ he says ‘a problem is the difference between where you are and where you want to be’. Put differently, a problem is the distance between your present state and your dream life. Andrew Kershaw, one time Chairman of Ogilvy & Mather, New York wrote inter alia ‘....The ultimate can never achieved. The best exists but is unattainable’.

The unattained yet desired, constitutes the problem.

The Bible recognises the existence of problems.

Job 5:6-7 "Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward."

Job 14:1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble

Psalms 20:1a The Lord hear thee in the day of trouble....

Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble

Psalms 107:26b-28 "...their soul is melted because of trouble,

They reel to and fro, and staggered like a drunken man, and are at their wit’s end. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses"

Nahum 1:7a The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble

A problem is a question or matter involving doubt, uncertainty or difficulty. It is a question proposed for solution or discussion.

In fact, the book of Judges is often regarded as a book of problems. In Judges Chapter 7, verses 1 to 7, you see a people in problems.

Individuals, families, corporations; nations and generations face problems, even in the Bible.

EVIDENCIES THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM

Going through hard times.

Circumstances of your life tearing you apart.

Enslaved by expectations that cannot be satisfied.

Weighed down with sorrow, heaviness and sadness.

Feeling you cannot go on.

You don’t know what is going on.

Internal warfare or condemnation.

Nature, people or other creatures want to impose any form of limitation on you.

You are facing a challenge that is too powerful or beyond your personal control.

The enemies of your life are wounding and wining.

You are confused about the way out.

You have tried everything-doctors, philosophy, psychology, science, human intelligence, religion, historical references, ‘copy and paste’ templates, yet nothing is working.

You are moving around in circles with much activity. However, there is little or no result to show for your efforts.

You are looking for someone to be friendly, care and show understanding, support or concern, but none seem available.
