There are four things that can cause God to tear up the decree of judgment: acts of righteousness, fervent prayer, changing your name, and changing your behavior. The liturgy on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is derived from the talmudic story about the three books, which claims that righteous deeds, prayer, and turning will modify the Divine Decree that has been issued on Rosh Hashanah.
