    Foreword

The World of Work is rebooting. Businesses are re-imagining and re-engineering themselves. Challenging established norms and rebuilding livelihoods are essential imperatives. In the era of intelligence and changing global landscape, the approach of doing business has been transformed significantly, which has provided scope for different trends and paradigms in the field of business management. These changes are being experienced in cultural, social, political, and technological spheres as well. The COVID related pandemic has also elevated business practices and allied disciplines. This has revolutionized the working styles of business entities which opens the doors for researchers to think and ponder upon the contemporary business trends. The impact of the COVID-19 is being felt by all businesses across the globe. Leaders are navigating a broad range of interrelated issues that span from keeping their employees and customers safe, shoring-up cash and liquidity, reorienting operations and navigating complicated government support programs. The world of work is being profoundly affected by the pandemic. In addition to the threat to public health, the economic and social disruption threatens the long-term livelihoods and wellbeing of millions. The pandemic is heavily affecting labour markets, economies and enterprises, including global supply chains, leading to widespread business disruptions.

In light of this, the prime focus of this book is to identify multiple ways to manage these changes across the globe. The book aims to enable to reflect, deliberate, and suggest necessary and desired measures in the present challenging business scenario in fields of marketing, human resources management, financial management, technology management, sustainability etc.

The book will highlight on the different challenges which are presently being faced by the global and Indian business environment and suggest measures, trends for shaping and reshaping future business opportunities and possibilities. Moreover, it will bring an exploratory insight on the best business practices in the era of innovation and novelty.

I am sure that the book will be useful in terms of bridging the gap between existing literature and future research requirements with respect to contemporary business trends in the Post COVID scenario. This book shall provide an interdisciplinary platform for stakeholders to present and deliberate the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as emerging challenges encountered and solutions adopted in their respective disciplines during the post COVID scenario.

    Preface

The business environment in contemporary times operate at the intersection of AI and public policy, which has led to creation of new frontiers in relation to sustainable development. While the COVID pandemic brought new challenges for policy makers as well as for businesses, it also provided an opportunity for businesses to reintegrate their processes so as to widen the spectrum of economic wellbeing. That the global supply chain disruption has dominated the economic discourse and communities are feeling the heat of inflation did not stop the businesses from coming up with innovative changes in spheres ranging from leadership to financial literacy and blockchain to banking interventions. The sudden surge in work from home, which is now becoming the norm, is a universal phenomenon which goes on to show universal alignment of business processes. The economic policies and financial intervention programs undertaken by government bears the imprint that government is eagerly trying to reimagine the public private participation in order to create a balanced consumption-production cycle.

To the extent of how businesses have changed course and its metastasizing effect on society, this book Contemporary Business Trends serves a repertoire of these trends and documents the patterns which will be of immense help to policy makers as much as to academics and practitioners. This book is an attempt to re-imagine the ways of doing business and optimization of constraints on a path to sustainable development and prosperous future. This book is a result of an international conference which was a unique meeting of minds that brought various stakeholders like academics and practitioners on one platform and threadbare deliberated on issues which impact our economic well-being. The book has been thematically structured and organized for the readers in a manner that they will take joy in reading the scholarly papers on various issues, in whatever order they want to read it. That the book not only draws readers towards pressing issues of our times but also provide plausible frameworks to navigate them successfully. The 18 papers, written by erudite scholars and academics on themes "Contemporary issues in Human Resources Management, Financial Management, Technology Management, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability and Challenges brought by Covid pandemic" have been written in a lucid manner so that readers can get the most out of this book. Every paper has engaged in the critical analysis of the issues and almost all the contours of respective themes have been covered. Besides, this book is an invitation to intellectual engagement to re-imagine the pedagogy of the most significant economic concerns of contemporary times

1.1 Women at Work- A Boon to Society

    Rashi Kulkarni

    ABSTRACT

Purpose: Women help build an inspiring work culture as the research will clearly document. Having women in the workforce is extremely beneficial and its advantages are innumerable. The main purpose of the paper is to show exactly why and how a women’s presence at work is extremely important not just to the organisation but to the world at large.

Methodology used: A quantitative study was conducted wherein an online questionnaire was sent to women of different age groups to get real-life inputs. Articles on similar topics were also referred to.

Major findings: A report from the World Bank mentioned that India ranks very low in the female labour force participation rates in the world. Low female LFPR has a huge impact on the GDP and proves to be a hindrance to the countries overall growth. Countries like USA have 56% women working and in China the rate is over 64% which is the highest in the world. Countries like Nepal and Bangladesh outperform India. A huge proportion of women in India usually drop out of work after marriage and or after having children. This study has revealed various experiences of women employees and their views on the organizational culture and atmosphere.

Discussion: Firms must take steps to stop the inequality between providing job opportunities to men and women. Other than offering 6 months paid maternity leave, firms should give other benefits to new moms which can be en- cashed upon later. Secondly, allowing women half-days and work from the comfort of their home until they are ready to come back to the workplace will help. Most women in our country have the responsibility of handling households and that should be taken into consideration and women should be allowed flexible working hours so that they can balance both home and work. Thirdly, firms should intentionally hire competent women who have taken work breaks to support and empower women.

Implications: Women help in building an inspiring work culture and create healthy competition, foster teamwork, bonding and help a company grow to its full potential. Women help build an inspiring work culture and add their much needed values to the organisation.

    INTRODUCTION

Before the First World War, a woman’s life was guided by domestic responsibilities. Nowadays more women are speaking out for change, but it wasn’t until the global outbreak of war that there was a shift in the gender dynamics. World War 1 allowed women to work; it was on them to keep the home running.

Millions of women joined the workforce between 1914-1918, helping to fill the gap left by a generation of military men. Women worked as drivers, postal workers and police. Despite the opportunities the conditions were poor. They were earning more than they had but were paid less than men for doing the same jobs. This has been going on till date.

This clearly shows how women in the workforce perform diverse roles and play a vital role in the workforce but despite that would and still do face inequality.

A report from the World Bank mentioned that India ranks very low in the female labour force participation rates in the world. Low female LFPR has a huge impact on the GDP and proves to be a hindrance to the countries overall growth. Countries like USA have 56% women working and in China the rate is over 64% which is the highest in the world. Countries like Nepal and Bangladesh outperform India.

The percentage of women in the workforce is below 47%. While with men, its 72%. That’s a difference of 25%, while some regions face a gap of 50%.

Women are less likely to work in India than they are in any country in the G2O, except Saudi Arabia a Deloitte report mentioned.

While disparities in basic rights; in schooling, credit, and jobs; or in the ability to participate in public life take their most direct toll on women and girls, the full costs of gender inequality ultimately harm everyone…ignoring gender disparities comes at a great cost—to people’s well-being and to countries’ abilities to grow sustainably, to govern effectively, and thus reduce poverty.

When a woman is involved in the economy everyone is better off. A lady’s economic involvement increases the GDP which is the basic standard for higher living.

Despite progress, the gaps in the participation of men and women in the workforce remain large. No economy has reduced the gender gap below 7 percent.

There are enumerable advantages of having women as a part of the workforce. On a smaller level, working women become financially independent and will have greater control over their own lives. This encourages women to stand against physical and emotional abuse, enabling them to handle social issues and pressures on their own. At the macro level, greater female force at work is good for the overall economy and will help raise the countries standards. Women are as important as men to not just the organisation but the economy as a whole and these are some of the few benefits of having more women in the workforce:

    • A boost to growth: women bring new skills to the workplace, the productivity and growth gains from adding women to the labour force (by reducing barriers to women’s participation in the labour force) are larger than previously thought. Indeed, our calibration exercise suggests that, for the bottom half of the countries in our sample in terms of gender inequality, closing the gender gap could increase GDP by an average of 35 percent. Four fifths of these gains come from adding workers to the labour force, but fully one fifth of the gains are due to the gender diversity effect on productivity.

    • Greater productivity: The contribution to growth from improved efficiency is overstated. A portion of the gain attributed to productivity is actually due to the increased participation of women over time.

The study discusses the reason why there are less women in the workforce, why the drop out of the work force and to show exactly why and how a women’s presence at work is extremely important not just to the organisation but to the world at large

    REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Researcher’s researching about women at work have taken multiple different approaches. Most studies focus on the difference between men and women in the workplace with one study recording how organisations benefit from gender-diversity. (Women at work: how organisational features impact career development-Naomi Ellemers) They found out that there is a consistent gender difference in career development and payment and women who feel undervalued at work will re-evaluate their priorities and are tempted to opt-out. The study helped to show what organisations could do to reap the benefits of gender diversity. Another research showed how despite significant promotion of diversity in companies, as well as legislation for equal opportunities for women and men, it must be noted that women still remain largely in the minority in decision-making positions. This observation reflects the phenomenon of the glass ceiling that constitutes vertical discrimination within companies against women. (The Glass Ceiling for Women Managers: Antecedents and Consequences for Work-Family Interface and Well-Being at Work- Audrey Babic and Isabelle Hansez). Both these research studies provide a good basis for the research. The research proposed aims on the prior existing research but explore topics that have not been dealt with and focuses on the reasons why there are less women in the workplace, why they are dropping out of the workforce, how having more women can help grow the economy and how can the problem of having less women in the workforce be solved.

    AIM:

To identify the need and the importance of having more women in the workforce and how having more women be a part of the workforce will help grow the economy and create higher sales and profits in an organisation v/s the one simply dominated
