    Chapter 1

Elise rushed out of Hans’ chambers in tears. Hans sighed as he watched her go. Another woman, the same ending. He was weary of them fleeing his rooms weeping. Of course, it was entirely his fault. He knew that.

His advisors had searched far and wide looking for a woman who might please him. Hans needed to produce an heir, which meant finding a wife.

Elise was the daughter of a prominent nobleman who owned a large wine estate. She would have been a good match for him. She was a sweet woman, but her breasts were too small and there was an ugly birthmark on her leg.

Hans closed his eyes, berating himself silently. He shouldn’t have mocked her birthmark. He’d just been so angry with himself as he looked upon another woman who regarded him with awe and realized that she wouldn’t satisfy him.

Something was wrong with him, he knew. He just kept finding fault in every woman his advisors sent to him.

Hans didn’t leave his chambers. He didn’t want to tell his advisors that he had chased away yet another potential match. It was unavoidable, but he wanted to postpone the moment for as long as possible.

He spent the rest of the day skulking in his rooms, turning away servants who tried to bring him food or messages, draw him a bath, or any number of other things. Hans stayed in his rooms for almost a full day, too ashamed to leave and confess his failure, even though he was sure his advisors would know about Elise’s unfortunate departure.

Finally, Hans decided that it was too cowardly to hide any longer. He bathed and ate, then got dressed and called for the council to assemble.

Hans held his head up high as he entered the council chambers. Kings didn’t show weakness. He felt the heavy weight of rule resting on his shoulders. Some days, it got almost too heavy to bear, but what could he do except keep going? Hans suspected that when he found the right woman, she would be able to help him carry the burden, but his hopes of that ever happening were dimming by the day.

Elise was not acceptable to me. I sent her away.

Jeran did his best to hide his anger, but it leaked out in his tone. Another one, Your Majesty? May I remind you that we are fast running out of eligible women for you to meet with? Word has spread of other women’s… unfortunate experiences with you. It is getting harder and harder to convince them even to meet you, let alone consider marrying you.

That got Hans’ back up at once. I’m the king! I do not need to explain my behavior to you or any woman, no matter how eligible she is!

Jeran took a deep breath. Of course, Your Majesty. He let the silence spiral horribly. Neither of Hans’ other advisors said anything. Enil and Lakay were both staring intently at the table, letting Jeran handle this.

Hans finally broke the silence. I understand, Jeran. I will try harder with the next one, I promise.

We’ve already sent a message to Lady Farilay of Arbrook. Lakay glanced nervously at Hans. I believe that she will meet your requirements, Your Majesty.

Hans found that hard to believe since he had never been able to pin down his requirements. He wanted a woman who was pleasing to his eyes, and he connected well with. It didn’t seem like too much to ask, but whenever he was with women, he couldn’t help but find faults with them. There was a reason his council consisted of only men.

Thank you, Lakay. I will try harder with Lady Farilay, I promise.

Hans glanced at Enil, who was still silent. Hans was reasonably sure that Enil was a plant by one of his enemies. A king always had enemies within his kingdom and without, and it was good to keep track of them. He had the man on the council to have him close enough to keep an eye on him. Enil usually gave sound advice, but Hans didn’t trust him. However, he trusted Lakay and Jeran with his life, and he was confident that they could keep Enil in check.

It took two full weeks for the council to persuade Lady Farilay to meet with him. Hans spent that time mentally preparing himself. It was starting to get beyond the point of hoping for his happiness. Maybe he simply needed to settle for a woman—any woman—no matter how displeasing he found her.

He had to produce an heir. There was no getting around that. Hans did his best to be a good king, to do what was right for his people. He made sensible laws and ensured that the weakest members of his kingdom were protected and cared for.

He wanted the best for people, and he really tried. He was well beloved by his people, but he knew that those close to him called him the ice king, the one of the frozen heart.

It was all very well for those who only saw him at a distance and benefitted from the laws he put in place. They didn’t know that in person, he could be cruel, arrogant, and cold. He didn’t understand why he did it, especially to women. It wasn’t that Hans didn’t care, but it wasn't easy to show it. Sometimes he felt like he couldn’t control his reactions.

Hans vowed that no matter what fault he found in Lady Farilay, he would ignore it. Arbrook was an influential province. A marriage to Lady Farilay would strengthen his position there and be advantageous to all.

After two and a half weeks, she arrived. Hans waited to greet her on the grounds. Lady Farilay stepped from her carriage, looking around. She was attractive enough, he supposed, but Hans noticed immediately that her hair was an unattractive shade of dull brown, like the back of a rat. Her breasts were entirely too small, too, barely enough to grab on to, if they even ever got to the stage of being intimate.

He pushed those thoughts aside, trying his best to focus on the pleasing curve of her waist or her plump, pink lips.

    Lady Farilay.

    Your Majesty. She curtsied
