- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a pretty quick read, mostly because it pulled me into the plot and was fast-paced enough that there were few real lulls in action during which my attention might have strayed. Credit where credit’s due, the author steadfastly followed the mystery writers’ rules of avoiding irrelevant details and making sure the reader had enough information to solve the case. Greg’s “voice” was smartly written, and Andrea, the assistant custodian, was adorable. I was somewhat put off by several characters’ penchants for offensively racist language and attitudes, though at least it was made pretty clear by the characters around them that this wasn’t acceptable. The same couldn’t be said of the homophobia (Greg toward his own desires, how those desires were actually weaponized against him by the Brits, etc.), though I suppose that I’m Greg’s case, he was indeed Russian at his core and had been raised to those beliefs and never really had them countered. Maybe showing what the Brits did, then, was just a way of illustrating how ugly the whole business was on all sides. Didn’t help it sit any better, especially when the other queer character in the book was so morally reprehensible. Unfortunately broad brushstrokes, in this case.
