    Chapter 1:

    My Grandfather

My grandfather’s name was Daniel C. Villicana. He was a huge inspiration in my life. He was an intelligent, hardworking man and a Mexican immigrant. He was a compassionate man who helped many people along his journey. I can definitely see a lot of myself in my grandfather whenever I remember anything about him.

He fell in love with and married my sweet grandmother Naborina at a very young age. She was such a sweet individual. I can definitely see why my grandfather would fall in love with her. With his childhood trauma, I truly believe in my heart that he found a part of his mom within my grandmother’s heart because she was caring and kind. At least, those are the parts I remember of my grandmother. She was still alive, at 96 years old, when I started writing this book. Whenever I spoke to her, I could still sense that part of her.

My grandfather came to work here in the United States during the time of the Mexican Farm Labor Agreement known as the Bracero Program , ratified by United States in 1942, while the United States was fighting World War II. The United States needed workers to replace those who had gone overseas as soldiers, and it asked Mexico to help. It must have been a very difficult decision for my grandfather to leave his young wife and young children to come here to support the United States. He would
