    Foosball Daddies - Golden Angel

    CHAPTER ONE

    Cindy

What do you know about foosball?

What don’t I know about foosball? Cindy muttered bitterly under her breath in answer to her boss’s question. If she hadn’t been focused on the lab report in front of her—the most recent one to come out of the company she’d been investigating—she would have thought twice before answering. There was only one reason anyone in the U.S. was talking about foosball these days, especially in the media, and his name was Dane Star.

Also known as her ex and the one who got away.

Unfortunately, he was now also known as one of the hottest models, and his face was plastered everywhere, but the real reason he was garnering so much interest was the way he was using his stardom to promote his true love—foosball. His devotion to the game had eventually been the end of their relationship. Now he was causing a foosball renaissance in the U.S.… well, it didn’t help any of her lingering resentment over their failed relationship.

Good, then you’ll be perfect for this assignment. The delight in Jeffrey’s voice did not make Cindy feel better.

Lifting wary eyes to him, Cindy sat back in her chair. Older than her by at least two decades, Jeffrey was old school in his mentality and kept sending her on what Cindy considered ‘fluff’ assignments. Yeah, she got that fluffy articles drew people into the magazine, but she wanted something more substantial. Something that would actually affect the world.

Like revealing the dangerous levels of pollution Connelly Industries was dumping into the river next to their plant and the officials they’d bribed to look the other way.

What assignment? You know I’m working on Connelly Industries. I have a new lab report—

Jeffrey was already waving his hand, cutting her off. Cindy clenched her back teeth together in frustration.

Yes, yes, and I’m sure it’s all riveting. We’ve been given a chance to interview Dane Star, though… I’m sure you know who that is. Jeffrey grinned at her as if he was sharing an inside joke.

Even if Dane wasn’t her ex, there was no way anyone who worked in the media industry had missed him. His handsome face was plastered across multiple magazines, either on the cover or in their ads, or both. Everyone wanted Dane Star representing them. He had a presence on every form of social media, either showing off his incredible chest muscles or his foosball skills, and his posts were constantly going viral.

That was why Cindy had taken to avoiding all forms of social media, since seeing his face everywhere she looked made her want to punch him right in his perfectly formed nose.

I know who he is, and I can’t take on any assignment having to do with him.

Jeffery blinked, shocked by her blunt assertion. Though Cindy was known for being brusque and efficient, she never turned down an assignment without at least hearing Jeffrey out. Even then, half the time, she found herself talked into doing it. The fluffy assignments paid bills and kept the magazine running.

    Why not?

Inwardly sighing, Cindy pushed away the impulse to lie. There was no reason to, other than embarrassment, and she couldn’t come up with any other good reason.

Because Dane Star is my ex. It’d be a… conflict of interest, and I doubt he’d want me anywhere near him. You need to assign someone else if you want a chance at getting a usable quote.

To her surprise, rather than nodding and leaving her alone—Jeffrey was usually quick to decide—he leaned back against the side of her desk, crossing his arms over his chest and frowning. Something uneasy stirred in Cindy’s gut. She liked to think she had a reporter’s instinct for when something was up, and right now, something was definitely up.

Well now, that’s very interesting, Jeffrey drawled, every word making the hair on the back of Cindy’s neck rise. Fuck. Somehow, she’d misstepped. Because Dane Star’s agent contacted me directly, specifically requesting you interview him.

    Oh, that fucking fuck fucker.

    Sean

Watching the various groupies and reporters swirl around Dane, jockeying for his attention and—for the reporters—a quote now that he was going to the finals of the Hurricane World Championship, Sean was keeping a lookout for one reporter in particular. So far, Cindy Standish hadn’t shown up.

He supposed it had been a long shot, but when he’d found out she was a reporter for Society, a national magazine that had already run a story on Dane and had reached out for an interview, he hadn’t been able to resist. He’d told Laura, the agent he and Dane shared, to let Society know Dane would give an interview… but only to Cindy Standish. Eventually, he would tell Dane what he’d done, but only if Cindy actually showed up.

Considering how seldom Dane conducted private interviews—though he was perfectly happy talking to as many reporters as possible at a podium, especially if they let him talk foosball—Sean had hoped it would be enough to tempt her to appear. Sometimes, he wasn’t sure why he couldn’t get her out of his head.

She’d been the first woman he and Dane had shared, but she hadn’t been the last. Technically, she’d been Dane’s girlfriend, but their nights together had been fantasy fulfillment, with him as the guest star. He and Dane had enjoyed sharing so much, they’d kept it up after Cindy was long gone and their modeling careers took off.

Do you think he will want a conference? Laura’s resigned tone as she came up to stand next
