Songs of a Dead Forest
Never in peth’s life had her roots come out of their own accord. Nor had she ever seen it happen to another dryad. Such a thing happened in goblin-tales to willful youths who strayed too far from their home forests, wicked little saplings who disobeyed their elders and so found themselves stuck in some nightmarish desert. She had always known it was possible, of course, but could only occur if a dryad had done something extremely stupid — or desperate.

She blasphemed against the Seasons with each step north, but to halt her journey meant death. Worse, it meant failing her grandmother.
It had been little over half a year since Grandy Wik had gripped Peth’s hand and spoken her last words, but it felt like a lifetime.
