    Chapter 1

    Frankie

Frankie was born first, to parents who were happy at the time. They were Burt and Maureen, and it was an idyllic life in the beginning before Frankie’s arrival. There was the house on the coast with a swimming pool, the two dogs and the beach nearby. Frankie had the face of an angel with curly blonde locks, a wonderful disposition and engaging smile albeit a bit boyish, a fact her parents chose to ignore, at least in the beginning. Maureen had tried unsuccessfully for years to fall pregnant, and this beautiful child was a true blessing, she doted on her above all else, even above the needs of Burt. Fortunately, he was immersed in work, and they were nesting and happy for the most part. Francesca conceived in the heady days of their holiday in France, would only answer to Frankie from the moment she could form words, she insisted.

When Frankie was only two months old, enter Aubrey and Helen, a couple holidaying at the coast near where Burt and Maureen lived. They all met for the first time at the local pub one evening when it was karaoke night. The four clicked instantly and became overnight firm friends, Aubrey and Helen cancelling most of their tours and trips that holiday, spending almost all of their time with the coastal couple. They even checked out of their hotel and moved into the coastal house for their holiday stay. Even after the holiday was over, Aubrey and Helen would regularly come for lengthy visits and long weekends over the few months they’d known each other. The two couples would go camping or away into the mountains for resort stays and long hikes. They were always out adventuring, and they grew tight knit in a very short space of time. They got on extremely well, liked the same things, had the same interests, it was the perfect foursome, and it was almost every weekend that Aubrey and Helen flew down. If they weren’t going adventuring, they stayed at the house and partied so as not to upset Frankie’s routine too much.

Frankie, only a few months old, would either be shipped off to her grandparents with a trusted babysitter, so the adults could play, or they would be flown down to watch over her. The grandparents didn’t mind, they loved the child fiercely. Sometimes she was left just in the care of the babysitter.

One particular evening at the house, after a heavy weekend of partying, with Maureen and Aubrey long passed out, Burt and Helen were sitting at the pool with their legs dangling in the water. He unloaded about their marriage and told her how he felt marginalised, sidelined and left out with Maureen giving all of her attention to Frankie. He had never spoken to anyone about his grievances, about how Maureen absolutely doted on the child, and left little or no time for him and his needs. He was just the breadwinner, the sole provider and felt like a spare part around the two of them. He lamented about how, from the beginning of her pregnancy, Maureen had absolutely shut him out of her life, it was all about the child. Helen listened attentively, watching Burt’s beautiful mouth form the words. She couldn't help herself, she leaned in quietly to kiss him intently. At first he was a little surprised, but he didn’t resist, he succumbed to her sweetness and their kisses became more passionate, their breathing hard. Clothes were being torn off, and it ended with them making passionate, sweet love on the lawn. When it was over, and they lay in each other’s arms, Burt felt big and brave, needed and wanted. A spark had been lit within him again, something he hadn’t felt for a long time. There was no guilt, just the promise of a brighter future, the seed had been planted, literally.

He turned to Helen, I’ve had feelings for you for a long time. I didn’t know they were reciprocated.

From day one I wanted you, had to have you, Helen smiled and stared deep into his eyes, turning his stomach to butter, but I never would’ve acted on them. It’s just, well, I got caught up in the moment.

Well, I’d like more moments, Burt said, lots more.

Then you shall have them, Helen smiled seductively, now that I know how you feel.

Burt kissed her, his breathing became heavier as she leaned into him and gave herself fully once more. Afterwards he lay looking at her, how do you feel about Aubrey?

We’ve been living past each other for years, Helen replied, that holiday when we all met, it was make or break time. We tried to save our relationship, and I guess we stayed together because we’d met you guys. But it’s all over really.

If you’re serious Helen, then I’d like to get the ball rolling a soon as possible.

Never been more serious in my life, Helen sighed sadly.

So you want to be with me, we’ve only known each other four odd months, and a lot will change. I need to hear you say it.

I want to be with you, Helen said smiling at him, gently caressing his face. They made love for a third time that night.

Before they went to their separate beds, Burt asked one last time, Helen are you sure, because if you are I’m announcing this at breakfast later. We can move to the farm; I’ve been wanting to get up there for a while now. My dad’s not coping and they’re ready to retire in their little house away from farm life.

Helen gently took his face in her hands, Burt I’m one hundred percent sure, announce it. I want to be with you, I have from the beginning. I just didn’t know you felt the same.

Right then, it’s a done deal, Burt grinned and puffed out his chest. He gave Helen one last lingering kiss before they headed to their spouses’ beds.

The next morning at breakfast, Burt told a shocked and surprised Maureen and Aubrey of their plans and asked Maureen for a divorce. Maureen, caught completely off guard started to get up to leave the table, but Aubrey grabbed her arm, don’t go, he said, if they can do this to us, I’m moving in here with you then.

What? Burt and Maureen blurted simultaneously.

Look, Aubrey continued looking at Maureen, we’re going to need each other for comfort. I won’t stay forever, just till we’re over this.

You can’t stay here in my house, Burt said, I forbid it.

Forbid nothing, Maureen hissed at him, pack your bags and get out right now.

This is still my house Maureen, Burt reminded her.

We’ll see what a lawyer says about that, Maureen warned him, now take this whore and both of you get out, before I do something I’ll regret for the rest of my life.

By the look on her face, they didn’t need to be told twice. They both jumped up and went to pack their things, then left together in Burt’s car. It was then that Aubrey went to sit by the pool, he broke down crying, and Maureen joining him, sat with him, holding him. She was still in shock, and really angry, there were no tears from her side yet. Aubrey hadn’t said a word to Helen. When she’d tried to engage with him, he shut her up with his hand. He wasn’t ready to deal with her yet, there would be time for that later. When the tears stopped and the anger came, he said to Maureen, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to spring it on you that I was moving in. I just wanted to spite them. I’ll go home in the morning.

There’s no rush, and actually, it’s not a bad idea, Maureen replied, at least we won’t be alone through this. I’m so mad at them both, I could murder the two of them.

I wonder how long it’s been going on, Aubrey said sadly.

That too, Maureen said, her eyes smarting, they’ve made such fools out of us both.

Well, I’ll have to get back at some point to pack up the house and put it on the market. Helen is entitled to half.

No chance of a reconciliation then, if this is just a stupid mistake by both of them? Maureen asked, her voice soft.

Aubrey looked at her seriously, no chance in hell, this is unforgivable, the worst betrayal. How about you?

Not even if hell freezes over, and I’m taking him to the cleaners, Maureen smirked, and I want full custody of Frankie.

    Chapter 2

    Frankie and Allie

Cherub like, and stocky with the most beautiful little face, blonde hair and intense blue eyes, seventeen-month-old Frankie stood by the cot looking at Allie through the bars, her eyes never leaving Allie’s face.

This is Alison, Helen said lovingly, your new little sister. Isn’t she gorgeous Frankie, we brought her home, just for you.

Frankie nodded in all seriousness. Her name’s Allie, she said in her cute little voice. I’m always going to protect her; I’m never leaving her. Allie was lying on her side, staring at Frankie.

That’s good my love, Helen looked down at Frankie, marveling at the child’s vocabulary for her age, she’s going to need someone like you, she’s so small.

And pretty, Frankie whispered in awe. Helen just smiled. She had no idea Frankie meant what she said. A few days later, when it was time to take her back to Maureen and Aubrey, Frankie refused to leave without Allie. Screaming, drama, tantrums and crying scenes, she flat out refused.

Burt tried to reason with her. Frankie she’s too small to travel, she has to stay here until she gets a bit bigger and stronger. I’ll fetch you often, you can visit whenever you like.

Then I’m staying. Frankie said frowning, feet astride, cheeks puffed, and arms crossed over her little chest. I’ll wait till she’s big.

No baby, you can’t. You need to go back to mama Maureen, she misses you.

She can visit me here then, Frankie used his own argument back on him.

He raised his eyes to the heavens, this child, he dialed Maureen, we’ve got a bit of a situation here, Frankie won’t leave without Alison.

Give her the phone, Maureen said, and when Frankie took the phone with both hands, too big for her face she listened intently, said nothing and gave the phone back to Burt.

I’m not going! she said firmly, not without Allie.

Oh for heaven’s sake, Burt said angrily, I’ll call you back Maureen.

He turned to Frankie, you can’t stay here forever, you need to go home.

Can, am home also, was the stubborn reply. Allie must come with me, or I stay.

Frankie, she’s only two months old. Mama Maureen won’t cope.

I can give her the bottle. Frankie said, it’s easy.

Frankie, it’s no, Burt’s voice was firm and final, you need to go to mama Maureen. Allie must stay here.

Daddy listen, Frankie said in all earnest, eyes wide and innocent. I won’t leave her ‘kay, she’s my baby. I won’t go in the car. Burt was beside himself; he wasn’t one for force, but it looked like he was heading that way, and Frankie screaming all the way in the car wasn’t very appealing.

Frankie, Helen said, what if me and Allie drive with, will that be okay.

Frankie nodded solemnly, yes but then she stays by me there ‘kay. Burt and Helen looked at each other. He dialled Maureen and said they were all coming down, that they could all work on Frankie together, he wasn’t winning with her. They’d leave in the morning, it was far, at least a 10-hour drive.

So the next morning they set off, Frankie held Allie in her little arms the whole way, hovered when she needed nappy changing, fed her herself. Allie was quiet and content as long as she was near Frankie, and the tantrums were over from Frankie’s side. Well for now. Maureen and Aubrey fussed over Allie as much as Frankie did at the coast house. She was a gorgeous baby; they couldn’t believe she’d been put up for adoption. Frankie in turn was never far from her baby, she insisted Allie sleep in her bed against the wall. The parents weren’t happy, but they had to give in.

I’ve never seen Frankie like this, Burt said later, she’s absolutely obsessed with that child. She’s normally so easily bored. All the adults nodded, Frankie was stubborn, and she almost always got her way.

We can all have a go tomorrow, Maureen said, try and get through to her.

Good luck with that, Burt replied.

So the next day, each in their turn tried to reason with Frankie, but there was no swaying her, she was staying by Allie, no matter what.

I have to move to the farm then mama, she said to Maureen seriously, trying to make her see why it was necessary in her own little way. Till she’s a bit bigger, then we can visit you.

Frankie, Alison isn’t your responsibility, she has daddy Burt and mama Helen to look after her. Maureen tried to explain.

Mama, Frankie said, hers a little voice of reason beyond her years. It’s Allie, that’s her name, and she needs me. You wouldn’t even understand.

No, you don’t understand Frankie. Allie needs to go home with her parents.

They not even mama, Frankie argued, they brought her home with them for me.

Maureen was finished, this child was not backing down, and her arguments were strong. She had to smile in spite of herself. There was no adult reasoning with Frankie, her mind was made up.

Okay, she said, joining the others on the terrace, we have a problem, Frankie is not budging.

She’s the child, for heaven’s sake Maureen, Burt shot at her, we don’t reason with her, we tell her, and that’s final.

Maureen’s eyes widened, then she started to laugh, yeah right, so then explain this to me, what is everyone doing down here? We’re being manipulated by that little shit. One thing’s for sure, she’s not going anywhere without her baby.

It’s not a doll, or a toy, Alison needs to come home with us. Burt interjected.

Well then it looks like so is Frankie, Maureen said, for now anyway. Or Alison can stay here for a little while, I don’t mind. I still have lots of Frankie’s old stuff.

No, Helen said strongly, it’s too soon.

Well, think about it, Maureen said, because I don’t know what else to suggest.

We could share the kids, Aubrey said, be nice to have a baby in the house again.

For now, Helen said firmly, Allie must stay at the farm, till she’s a little bigger.

So then, what about Frankie? Maureen asked.

Helen sighed, either we convince her to stay, or she’ll have to come too.

It’s a lot of work for you Helen, both of them. Maureen said.

Actually Frankie helps with Allie a lot, and she’s calm when Frankie’s around.

We could’ve sorted this on the phone. Burt was angry, the farm is standing.

Your supervisor is handling things, Helen said looking at him.

It’s not the same, he was clearly irritated with her. I’ll trying talking to the little shit again.

He went to Frankie’s room, she had Allie in her arms, was explaining something to her, a serious talk. Frankie, we have to get back to the farm. You need to stay here my love; mama Maureen is lonely without you. Allie must come back with us, it’s the only way.

No daddy, then I’m coming with you. I’m not leaving her alone.

But she won’t be alone Frankie, she has us. We’ll take good care of her till you come back again.

No daddy, Frankie began to cry, and Alison started to bawl too.

Burt just leave, Helen was standing in the doorway. After he’d left, she sat down to console both girls, Frankie, sometimes adults don’t always make sense, but Allie is too small to be away from us just yet.

Why? Frankie teared up again, you’re not her mom. She needs me now.

Helen was dumbfounded, how did she reason with this child. She said in a firm voice, Frankie, you have to stay here, and Allie is coming home with us, no more arguments.

I’ll come there, Frankie said in a tough little voice, I’ll walk, I don’t care. I’ll find her.

Aubrey was standing in the doorway, Helen, leave this to me. Helen left, and he sat on the bed next to Frankie. What if we went up next month for a visit, I could take some leave Frankie.

Then Allie can stay here till then, Frankie said.

She can’t my love, she’s too small.

Daddy, I can take care of her, I have to, she was looking down at the angel in her arms.

Why do you think you can do a better job than us adults Frankie?

Cos she’s just a baby daddy. We understand each other.

Frankie, she doesn’t even know what’s happening around her yet. She needs to bond with daddy Burt and mama Helen.

She does know, Frankie wailed, she talks to me, and she wants to stay with me also. Allie started to cry with Frankie again. Aubrey tried his best to calm them both down but failed miserably and left.

Back on the terrace with the others he said, that child is not letting Allie go, and she’s prepared to run away to the farm if you take Allie without her.

That’s what she told me, Helen said, she’ll walk if she has to.

The adults stared out over the ocean, at a loss.

Fine. Helen said eventually, Frankie comes back with us for a few more months, by then she might be sick of the child. Here’s hoping, she raised her eyes to the heavens. Is that okay with you? she asked Maureen.

Do we have any choice, Maureen smiled wryly, she will run away after Allie, you know her.

Helen addressed them all, if she’s still this bad in a few months’ time, then Allie can come stay here with you guys for a while. She won’t be such a lot of work then, will be on solids, and hopefully teething will be over.

It was agreed, Frankie would stay with Allie, and the parents would just have to cope around them. There was no other way. Maureen and Aubrey said they might pop by for a week or so, and it was unanimously agreed that this was the best way forward for everyone. Back at the farm, Frankie fussed and doted over Allie. She even dragged her duvet into the room and slept on the floor next to her, until Burt moved her bed into the nursery. Frankie caught Allie’s first smile, she always smiled at Frankie, and gurgled. She was a happy baby if Frankie was around, niggly, restless and tearful if she wasn’t. Maureen and Aubrey did visit, and it was clear to all, they’d made the right decision. Frankie only left Allie when she was sure the child was sound asleep, and then, not even for too long. Frankie went through all the milestones with Allie, her first tooth. Even gave her, her first taste of solid food, spoke to her endlessly. Took her for long walks in the pram, her little arms extended high, talking, talking. The parents never tried to separate them again, shared the responsibility of raising the two together. It was no surprise that Allie’s first word was Frankie.

When Allie could walk, Frankie would take her by the hand and they would go exploring in the gardens, their little blonde heads pushed together, marveling at whatever Frankie had found to show her. They went to pre-school together with strict instructions to teachers, not to try and separate them. It was decided that they would be schooled at the coast, it just made more sense, then spend holidays on the farm for the most part. It was an idyllic life for the girls. They didn’t care where they were, as long as they were together. Even when Frankie had to have her tonsils out, Allie stayed with her in hospital, a private nurse was hired to keep an eye. They had their own world, and their own secrets, the parents shared their lives with them, but knew very little of what the two were always discussing, and they never stopped talking. If one got hurt or cut themselves, the other cried too. They were always up a tree, or on the rocks at the beach, always having some adventure or the other, Frankie dragging Allie into everything, Allie never questioning, she did what Frankie did, always.

Aubrey had a boat and from a young age, he would take the girls fishing, but they hated the part where the fish had to die. Instead they would go snorkeling in shallow waters, free dive reefs with him, they had great adventures with Aubrey, he loved having the girls with him. Maureen often joined them on their adventures, but the three of them were mostly too wild for her, and she would wait for them back at the picnic spot or keep an eye from the boat.

The parents had huge problems when Frankie was ready for primary school, she refused to go without Allie. Allie in turn screamed so much at the thought of losing Frankie, that it was another dilemma and drama the poor parents had to deal with and decide on. Now it was both of them they had to battle, and the two stood together, very strong willed. Little angels to behold with the devil in them. They tried to get Allie in a year early, she was nearing 5. She was bright, and she would’ve kept up her side with ease, but the school deemed her too young. So they held Frankie back a year, it was the only way, the girls were only 15 months apart. Finally they went together, and were introduced as sisters, just to make life easier all round, they did look alike, sort of. Both blonde and blue eyed, Frankie, the more muscular and boyish, Allie taller and leaner. All the parents were there for their first day, and everyone was in tears. Maureen said she’d wait by the school gate, till their school day was done, she was so worried, but Aubrey persuaded her not to. If Allie was sick, Frankie stayed at home, and vice versa. They made a few friends at school, that they played with and allowed into their circle, but no-one got close.

Early on in their school careers, teachers noticed that Frankie had a beautiful singing voice, it could arrest a person, hold them spellbound. She was always enlisted for school plays and concerts, and because of it, they had to give Allie a part too. She was almost always a tree or some such other prop. Frankie found it very amusing, Allie not so much. When she was a tree, Frankie would always say to her, bark Allie bark, you’re a good oak, and she’d get a smack from Allie for her trouble.

But with her voice, Frankie held the audience, they were enraptured. She had the purest voice, no matter what she sang. Whether it was rock, pop or a ballad, she could move people to tears, and she loved to sing, she was a natural entertainer. She sang all the time, always testing her range, and Allie loved to listen, she didn’t mind sharing Frankie with the world, as long as she was with.

So the years flew by and their primary school days were over. The girls were growing into stunning little mini adults, tanned, healthy and gorgeous. Frankie always kept her hair shortish, and Allie grew hers longer, they complimented each other in every way. Often, people would just stop and stare, it was their aura, their happiness, health and beauty, it was infectious. They were mostly always laughing, a little team. They learned and experienced everything together, they were never apart, and their parents doted.

    Chapter 3

    High School

They breezed through their first year of high school, Frankie always the very popular one because of her singing. Allie took on the role of protecting her. Up till now it had always been Frankie the leader, always heading first with Allie behind. But now it was Allie’s turn to keep Frankie at peace when people became too much, and they always did. Everyone always wanted a piece of Frankie. She was soft, she obliged, but she grew weary, and that’s where Allie stepped in. She decided what roles Frankie could play in school concerts, what parties she could sing at. Allie took control, so that Frankie wasn't so overwhelmed. Frankie loved her more for it, and it meant that they could spend more time alone together, which was all that really mattered. She found herself relying more and more on Allie to keep things in check. Allie took care of the little things, sorted everything, and made Frankie’s life easy. All Frankie had to do was concentrate on her singing, and she was making quite a name for herself with it. She was taking lessons, advancing her range, learning the guitar and piano, always the music with Frankie, and she loved to write her own songs. People were starting to notice her, people in high places, there was no question, her voice was exceptional, it was her calling.

It was in their second last year of high school that everything changed, that things began to take another turn for the girls. Frankie was almost 17, and Allie coming up fast on 16.

Spending a few weeks on the farm during school holidays Frankie suggested they take the boat out on the dam, enjoy a picnic and a swim, just the two of them, then explore the caves. Allie loved the idea; the dam and the caves were their favourite places. There was no island on the dam that they hadn’t explored, no part of this country was unknown to them. They knew every inch of the farm, and they knew it well. Burt had made sure they worked it on most of their holidays and knew how to run it. It wasn’t all fun and games, but there was always time for play, the girls made sure of that. Helen too kept them busy in the kitchen, teaching them skills that they would need later in life she always said. The girls loved every aspect of the farm, always dreamed of spending most of their time there when they were much older and done traveling the world.

I'll organise the food you get some blankets. Frankie said to Allie while heading over to the kitchen.

Maybe sneak in some champagne, Allie grinned.

    Frankie laughed, Already done.

They walked down to the dam together holding hands, something they’d done their whole lives, they always held hands wherever they went. Kids at school used to tease them, but after a few punch-ups, they realised these two were not to be messed with. Frankie helped Allie into the boat, then untied the rope and climbed in herself. They each had an oar, and easily rowed out into the middle of the dam where they sat munching their sandwiches and drinking champagne from the bottle, enjoying each other’s company. They talked about everything and nothing, laughing and heady from the drink.

Let's go explore in the caves Frankie said, and Allie nodded. They rowed out to the far side of the dam and walked into the hills for a long while, until they came to the cave mouth, it was well concealed behind brush and vegetation. They knew exactly where it was.

Did you bring the torch? Allie looked over at Frankie.

Shit no, Frankie said looking back at her, doesn't matter, we'll just work our way through to the sunlight clearing, like we always do.

Allie just smiled, these were the kind of adventures she loved. But once they entered the cave opening it was pitch black, their eyes were straining to adjust to the inky dark. Allie groped forward, feeling for Frankie’s hand, found it and held fast. Frankie’s other hand was extended in front of her, feeling her way, feeling fresh air. They moved slowly forward, at a snail’s pace.

Bad idea Frankie, let's go back, it's scary, I can hear things breathing. Allie whispered.

Frankie burst out laughing, that's us you idiot, it's not much further. We can climb out at the clearing, bit longer but more fun that way don't you think?

Says you, and you alone, came the nervous reply.

Slowly, slowly they edged forward, seeing nothing, surrounded by the black dark. Allie kicked and tripped over a large rock that somehow Frankie had missed and fell hard into her. They tumbled to the ground, Frankie fell face forward, hands extended cushioning the fall, Allie landing on top of her. The silence is a long one, Frankie aware of sand and stones under her, pressing into her, Allie on top of her, heavy and breathing hard.

With effort Frankie twisted around under Allie, fuck, what happened, you okay?

Allie said nothing, she was acutely aware of Frankie under her, their bodies meshed, the comfortable, the warm, the familiar, blending as one, hips pressing together. She pressed forward, found Frankie’s lips and locked them with her own. A long, lingering sensual kiss, they taste each other for the first time, tongues exploring, finding the new, breath coming fast. Eventually they part, reluctantly, another long silence, catching their breath. They kiss again, and again, Allie grinding her hips into Frankie, slowly, deliberately, divine. Allie eventually pulls away, and pushes herself up, her knees between Frankie’s legs, she’s trying hard to see her face, gauge her expression.

Frankie is silent, then eventually says with a smile in her voice, unexpected, but nice, very nice.

    When opportunity presents… Allie giggled.

Going to bring you here a lot more, no torch. Frankie said, every day in fact,

Happy to explore some more if it just wasn't so dirty in here, Allie replied shivering and dusting herself off.

And there it is, your OCD has broken the spell. Come on... Frankie laughing gets up. She grabs Allie's hand and comfortably but in a state of high excitement and euphoria, they head forward slowly again, both reliving the past few moments, both with big grins.

After 15 minutes or so of no talking, just concentration and inching forward Frankie slows.

Allie, praise and blessed be, ah have seen the light, she says in an American accent.

You going all religious nut on me? Allie asks, but she’s pleased they’ve made their way through. Apart from their moments together, this place was creepy in the dark.

No, but I can see light at the end of the tunnel, can I get an amen?

Amen you idiot, I had visions of being lost in here wandering the darkness forever. Allie’s voice is clear and full of laughter.

Wouldn't be such a bad thing. Frankie laughed back and squeezed Allie’s hand.

Are you insane, this mama wants a bath and home comforts.

Kiss me again and it's a done deal.

After just now, you don’t have to tell me twice hun. Allie leaned into her, found Frankie’s lips, and was rewarded with another lingering wonderful kiss. Breathless they parted.

Frankie looked at her, why did we wait so long to do this. I should’ve grabbed you when I was two.

Allie burst out laughing, you're an idiot. Now please get me the hell out of here.

Your wish is my command, I’m your slave, you my mistress, Frankie replied with a smile, took Allie’s hand and led her slowly towards the light.

They edged to the clearing scrambled up the rocks and out the top. Walking back to the dam Allie took Frankie’s hand again, and they walked together grinning, stopping now and then for more sensual kisses. From then on, they would often make their way back to the caves, or to well-hidden secluded spots around the dam, as they explored each other a little more. Felt each other out, gauging by the other's expression, gasps and eyes, what brought ecstasy. They enjoyed each other, the way their bodies moved together, the way they tingled all over, the divine feeling of each other. They are always completely lost in each other by total surrender, reluctant to part, to go back to reality. Always breathless and heady after having been together, always the flushed afterglow.

They finish high school, both with an exceptional pass rate. Allie wants to study psychiatry, so she can better understand the crazy of Frankie she says. She’d always been the studious philosopher, interested in how the mind worked, how so many things could go wrong and why. How to understand and fix people, starting with their minds, she knew this was her calling. She had sent off applications and was awaiting on replies, but knew it wouldn’t be a problem getting in. Many of her writings had already been accepted at universities throughout the country and online, used by students far ahead of her in the curricula. Throughout their lives, she had Frankie listen to her ramblings, and Frankie always obliged, marveling at how far beyond her years Allie was. It was fascinating to feel her passion, hear her talk, the things her mind could analyse were phenomenal.

Allie is the brains, she would tell everyone, me Frankie, I make the music."

Frankie on the other hand would study the arts, specifically music, she loved everything about it, it was what defined her. She was always singing and composing new songs. Besides Allie, this was all she lived for. Music coursed through every fibre of her being, it was always a part of her. If they couldn’t get into the same varsity, Frankie would have to go to the school of the arts, her reputation having preceded her, she had already been accepted there. It was already freaking her out, if she went to the school of the arts, they wouldn’t be together all the time. They were older now, understood, that sometimes they would have to walk this journey alone, but neither of them relished the idea. They were reluctant to discuss it, but when they did, were happy in the fact, that they would see each other often, as much as possible. Frankie’s music resonated with people on a binaural level, it invoked emotions they could relate to, it made them feel like a better person, like they could achieve anything. It was a little magic she weaved into everyone’s lives. Her voice range was exceptional, and she knew how to use it to her advantage. On stage she became an enigma, the audience couldn’t get enough of her, would crave more.

But before they settled down to their life’s journey and studying, they decided, that they would take a gap year and travel a bit first. Tour Europe, enjoy adventures, make memories and have fun, see the world before life got all serious and parted them. Burt loved the idea of them getting some culture, he offered to pay for their tickets and needs. Maureen and Aubrey would give them an allowance. The girls said, if needs be, they would work their way through the countries, doing odd jobs along the way to get by. They were so excited about going. Frankie joked that she would sing for their supper. They made hundreds of hushed plans and would leave in the coming months.

One day at the farm, a few days after Christmas, Frankie threw Allie onto her bed and jumped on top of her. Shoving her hand down Allie’s tracksuit pants, she kissed her passionately. Allie at first squealed and laughed, and tried to pull away, then responded feverishly, kissing her back. She couldn’t help herself, Frankie was divine. She pushed up her hips to meet Frankie’s thrusts. So lost were they in each other, they never heard Burt come into the room, they’d thought no-one was home.

What the fuck!!! Burt shouted, downstairs now... both of you. Face red, and looking like thunder, he turned on his heel and stormed off. The girls jumped apart in fright, startled, both ashen, staring at the departing Burt.

Fuck Frankie said, I never heard him come home. They stared at each other, eyes wide and locked for a long time.

Now, Burt shouted from down below, making them both jump. Sheepishly they went downstairs into his study. Standing just inside the door, they were both too nervous to look at him.

What the hell do you two think you’re doing? He spat, he could hardly get the words out.

Dad, Frankie tried to reason, we’re in love, there’s nothing wrong with it.

Nothing wrong, Burt screamed, nothing wrong!!! In my house, under my roof. He stared at them livid, they stared down. Listen you little idiots, I’ll tell you what’s wrong with this... he motioned at them and then spat the words out slowly, deliberately, I am Allie’s biological father, you two are sisters. I could destroy you both with this, it’s disgusting.

Wait... what! Allie blurted shocked, staring at him incredulous, and you only thought to mention this now. Why would you keep that from me, from us.

It’s a long story, he glared at her, then to Frankie growled, go and pack your bags, you’re staying by your mother until I’ve decided what to do, and you will tell her nothing. Do you understand me.

No dad, Frankie protested, I’m not leaving Allie.

Frankie, do as you’re told, this time there will be no arguing, you two have to be split up. It’s happening today, right now. You’re still a minor, Allie even more so, I will have you charged with statutory rape.

Are you insane... I’m nearly seventeen, Allie interjected.

Shut up, you shut the fuck up, Burt hissed, pointing at her, I’m not done with you.

I’m eighteen, Frankie shouted, you can’t make me do anything anymore.

He came around from his desk and lunged for Frankie, blind with anger. Frankie managed to evade him and bolted upstairs almost colliding with Helen.

What the hell is going on? Helen looked shocked and hurried down into the office behind him.

These two have been fucking behind our backs for God only knows how long. It’s disgusting, they’re sisters. I told Allie she’s mine, and now she knows the truth. I’m splitting them up right now.

Burt you can’t, Helen pleaded, they didn’t know.

Watch me, he hissed at her, don’t side with them, they’re pure evil, devil spawn. Frankie is leaving this house now. Frankie had come back into the office by this time and was staring at Burt.

At least let them say goodbye, Helen pleaded with tears in her eyes.

No!!! he shouted, and coming around the desk, pushed Helen out the office. He grabbed Frankie and dragged her out by the arm, she was staring at Allie wide-eyed. He locked the door behind him, trapping Allie inside.

Allie still reeling, and deeply shocked by the news, was scared for Frankie. She banged on the door viciously, she tried to force it open, but it was unyielding and unrelenting. She could hear Frankie and Burt shouting loudly upstairs, and Helen’s anxious and pleading voice. Then after a long while of eerie silence, car doors were slamming outside, an engine turned, and a car roared off. Allie’s tears were spilling, Frankie she cried, Frankie she screamed, Frankie. She banged on the door, but the house was silent, dead silent. Hours later, crunching tyres again, angry voices, doors slamming. Allie shot up on her feet, bladder bursting, anxious, straining to hear what was being said, she listened for Frankie’s voice.

The door swung open, it was Burt looking thunderous, Allie wilted a little under his gaze.

Get up to your room now, he said angrily, gesturing upstairs.

Where is Frankie? she asked, trying to look past him, but he blocked her view.

That is none of your concern, she’s been dealt with.

What do you mean, Allie asked incredulous, you can’t just send her away, you can’t do this to us. I’ll find her.

Oh she put up a fight, Burt said sarcastically, but she listened well enough when I told her I would lay charges for what she’s done to you. She’ll be leaving you alone now.

You can’t do this, Allie shouted at him and started to cry, she did nothing wrong, it was me, all me.

Stop arguing with me and get upstairs. Burt commanded her in a voice that left no room for further argument. Helen came in, wrapped Allie in her arms and led her upstairs, giving Burt a filthy look on the way. This is going to cost you big time, she hissed.

    Get out! he growled.

Where is she mama? Allie pleaded all the way up, Is she okay?

She’ll be fine Allie, everything’s going to be fine, just let dad calm down.

No mom, it’s not, Allie wailed, I have to go after her. He can’t do this.

He can Allie, you’re still underage and his ward, he can do this.

Is he really my father? She asked looking at Helen with wide, innocent, scared eyes.

Before Helen could answer, Burt pushed past them into her room, and grabbed Allie’s cellphone and laptop. You’re staying in here young lady, until I’ve made final plans for you, and no phone or internet, no outside contact.

You can’t do this. Allie screamed again, near hysteria. But he just pushed Helen out of the room and locked the door. She banged on the door screaming until she was exhausted.

Finally spent, Allie sat on the bed and stared out of the window for a very long time. She realised escape was futile. The windows had bars on them, the door was solid, there was no way out. She went to the en-suite bathroom and relieved herself, then decided it was time to die, she couldn’t and wouldn’t live without Frankie. She removed a blade from her razor and poised it above her wrist. About to take the plunge, a vision of Frankie suddenly appeared in front of her, shaking her head at Allie in a silent plea of no, an anguished look on her face. Allie stopped the blade in mid-air as she watched the vision fade, and dissolving into tears again, wailed, oh Frankie, where are you, please, please come back for me. I can’t do this. She cried until there were no more tears, then threw herself on the bed, completely overwrought with grief, the shock of all that had happened settling over her like a cold relentless blanket.

The next morning Maureen called Helen, what the hell is going on, Frankie is in a state, she won’t talk, just stays in her room crying. What happened?

Burt caught them together and freaked. Helen says tearfully.

So what! Maureen blurted, her voice angry, we all knew this day would come, that we would have to face it. They were made for each other, were meant to be together. He can’t just separate them.

It’s more complicated than that Maureen, you know what Burt’s like, he’s having none of it.

Oh for heaven sake, Maureen sighed, let me speak to him then, make him see reason.

Hold on, Helen said and called Burt to the phone.

Maureen, whatever you have to say, I’m not interested, Burt barked into the phone.

You can’t do this Burt, you’re destroying two lives over something really stupid.

So everyone keeps saying, but I can, I will and I have, they’re underage. This thing, this obsession with each other has been unhealthy from the start. Now it’s time to make their own way in life, meet others, be normal. I’m making arrangements to fly Frankie to New York as soon as possible. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m really busy.

Burt, the tone in Maureen’s voice arrested him, you cannot make decisions on that scale without discussing it with all of us first. There are schools of music just as good over here, I don’t want her so far away.

Maureen, speak to Frankie, it’s already a done deal, and she’s agreed. Just make sure she’s ready. It’s going to happen fast. Burt slammed the phone down on her.

Maureen stared at the phone angrily, and started to dial back, she wasn’t finished with him. Stopping, his words resonating in her ears, she went into the room where Frankie was lying on the bed. Her face swollen from crying, grief and despair etched. Frankie's tears are still flowing. Maureen gathered Frankie up into her arms and held her, like she always did when Frankie was hurt or sick. She held her for a long time rocking her gently, then said, Frankie, your dad tells me you’ve agreed to go to New York, is that right? Frankie nodded her head into Maureen's shoulder.

Why? You can’t leave Allie, not now, you guys had this whole adventure planned. Neither of you will cope without the other, that’s a fact.

Mom, if I don’t do this, Frankie pulled back and looked at Maureen, Allie will suffer the brunt of him, he made sure I understood that. I can’t let her suffer. I’m doing this for her. He’s threatened me with charges, and he’s threatened to have her sent away to a home or something till she’s of age. Her beautiful blue eyes are torn, rent with despair.

Well then let’s go get her, Maureen says consolingly, her heart breaking for the girls, she can’t stay there with that monster.

Mom, if it was but that simple, I would already be back there, she wailed, apparently Burt is her biological father, that makes us sisters. Tears are flowing freely now.

What…. Maureen says, no that’s not possible, who is her mother then? You mean to tell me he had another affair while he was with Helen. That doesn’t make sense, the dates...

Frankie cut her off, I don’t know mom, he didn’t say. It’s better this way, for Allie’s sake, I have to go. But I’m dead inside, life is over for me. I won’t be happy again, Allie was my whole world, will always be.

You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to Frankie. That’s bullshit. If you don’t want to go, then don’t, you’re eighteen, you can make your own decisions. I’ll go to court if I must, this ends now, I’m bringing the two of you back together, if it’s the last thing I do. We’ll work it out.

Frankie gave a half attempt at a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. That’s why I love you the most mom, you’ll fight to the death for us.

Maureen pushed her child’s hair back lovingly. Damn straight, you know I will. So let me make some calls. You go make some tea.

No mom, Frankie stopped her, eyes pleading, it’s no good, this will go on for years, you know how stubborn that bastard is. The only ones that will win here are lawyers. I’ll go to New York, and if it’s not for me, I’ll come back, I promise. For now, I need to put distance between me and that man or do something terrible and pay for it the rest of my miserable life.

Maureen can see that Frankie is deadly serious, her jaw set, her face other worldly. She correctly senses that Burt’s life is in imminent danger right there. Frankie carries on talking, Allie and I must just be strong now, we’ll get through this, he can’t keep us apart forever. One day, we’ll be together again. I’m holding onto that mom, it’s what I’m living for, to see Allie again.

Oh baby, Maureen hugged her, tears flowing too, well maybe he can force you two apart, but he can’t stop me from seeing her, and when I do, I’ll tell her everything you’ve just told me. Give her something to hold onto until you return as well. As for Burt, that bastard is going to pay.

In time mom, Frankie said, not now, for the sake of Allie, just not now.

Wise words my child, Maureen eyed her,
