~ CHAPTER 1 ~
Bitter Sweet
I wish, I wish with all my heart to find my
purpose and not get lost in the dark …
—Anne
If there were an opportunity to choose our family, I’m sure many of us would have done just that. Being a female, that would mean having a father who would not attack every boyfriend that you have; and for a male, a mother who does not stare down every girlfriend you have had.
What about those siblings who do not respect your personal space? And for those of us with children, those precious little darlings our friends think our kids are when, in fact, they are the reason our hair either falls out or turns gray!
Although some of us wish that we could have told the stork that we would rather be dropped at the doorstep to the couple that lives just a few blocks away, we are birthed into our respective families for a reason. Despite what you are faced with, you have to accept what is and move on.
In her earlier years living in the Bahamas, Anne grew up in a home that many would regard as stable. However, that was not entirely the case. For you see, her home was a single-parent home. Despite her father’s absence, she decided that she would not let that diminish what she thought about herself. Of course, she wanted him there. But Anne was determined to make her mother proud. She knew her mother was trying her best to provide for her children.
Anne’s mom was a strong woman, a fighter. All the unfortunate events she encountered while being a young single parent just seemed way too much to bear, but she pushed, she survived, despite all the mishaps throughout her life.
Fortunately for Anne, fate came along a few years later, and she was blessed with a husband. Finally! she thought. There was her provider, her support, her prince charming! Deciding to be married at a young age was a chance Anne was going to take because she did not want to endure the things she experienced her mother had to. Anne’s life began to change as her husband made her the happiest woman alive! And you know, A happy wife equals a happy life!
And then in a blink of an eye, life took her by surprise. Anne’s knight in shining armor was gone. Still at the tender age of nineteen, she became a divorcee and was left to provide for her son on her own. Anne’s past was now her present, and she was now the young single parent that she thought she never would be.
She was depressed, discouraged, and defeated. Although, every chance Anne had, she would take long drives, with tears in her eyes that were so blinding, she would sit at the beach and stare deeply at the ocean. Life just didn’t make sense anymore. Anne could see her reflection in the rough waters but would say to herself, Self …
Herself said, Uh?
She asked, Self, are we going to remain broken and living a mediocre life, or are we going to fight?
But she was drained and had no determination. Anne wanted out!
She continued her beach visits, hoping that the tide would change, and one day there it was. Instead of her battered, bruised reflection, she saw her mother—a strong woman, a fighter.
She thought, Why did I decide to give up?
Anne knew that she was destined to succeed, and so she decided to fight! She knew that despite her circumstances, she was born to be someone great! She was born to be a legend, if only to her son. Just then she brushed off the sand, wiped her tears away, and headed home. The next day was about to be a new, and she vowed to herself that every day thereafter was going be great!
The next day Anne went to work and decided to creep out of her distant shell for some fresh air. Out of all the employees who worked with her, she opened up to Grace. She observed her personality for quite some time since she started working in the same department as her. Grace seemed like someone who had the potential of growing into Anne’s friend. Grace seemed happily married and always referenced the Bible and was filled with humor. Anne knew she would provide words of encouragement and motivation. Plus, Anne was dying for laughter. Befriending Grace was exactly what she needed. Keeping so much pain to herself felt heavy. She needed a friend to confide in, someone she could trust, and it appeared to be Grace.
As their friendship grew, they started talking about Anne’s past relationship with Ry and what led to their divorce. Before Anne started talking, she realized that she was about to relive the excruciating pain she had experienced. Their relationship started to crumble after he started staying out extremely late, sometimes up to five o’clock in the morning. They would always get in an argument for him doing that. What committed man stays out that late without a call or a text to his wife?
One day he even came home and told Anne that she didn’t even know what sex smelled like. Young and naïve at the time, Anne didn’t think anything of it. But now, as Anne was recalling, she thought he must have cheated and came home knowing he smelled like sex, and Anne said nothing, unaware of the smell. That dirty dog.
The pain of being with him kept growing, so they eventually decided to separate.
Anne explained to Grace that during their separation, he moved to another island. After living there for a year, he moved back. That’s when she attempted to save their marriage. But to her surprise, he had simultaneously got into another relationship with another woman, Jana. They were working at the same hotel together. Anne told Grace that despite his involvement in another relationship, she still attempted to save theirs. In her attempt, she thought being intimate with him would help. But when she tried to make physical contact with him, he had the audacity to tell her that he couldn’t cheat on his girlfriend with her! How could he fix his mouth to say such a thing? Anne thought.
He then told her that he wasn’t sure that he wanted to leave her just yet, that he wanted to figure out his pros and cons first. Pros and cons?
She was baffled. Then it came to her, this dude wanted to have his cake and eat it too. He wanted the best of both worlds. Anne could see ignorance staring her in the face, but she didn’t know what to do.
At the age of nineteen, Anne was already facing a tough situation. She was lost. With no marital support from her family nor his, Anne was on her own to fight. But how long would her tender arms hold on for fighting for their future together on her own? After much prayer, she’s still not sure if it was God’s plan or did she let the devil get the best of her because a year later they both signed those papers. Just as Anne thought her life was changing for the better, a volcano erupted in her face, and she was now treading the single-mother road just like her mom did.
Anne continued explaining to Grace. She told Grace that Ry was born in Jamaica but came to the island with his mother when he was about five years old. His mother is a Jamaican too who married after coming to the island to live. She then gave birth to more children.
When they met, she didn’t know that Ry wasn’t considered a citizen. She never realized that he wasn’t. Plus, he had graduated from a local school. After finding out, she stayed
