Introduction
How to Write on 1001 Subjects! is an adventure that revolves around definitions, storytelling and writing. It is a game whose language every human being ought to understand because everyone plays it. To live or play this sport well, one must learn the rules that govern it. And that is where this manual comes in. This guide works on the assumption that for anyone to practice the art and science of storytelling and writing one must have already mastered the medium of the craft—grammatical accuracy. Consequently, this book does not go into that area as there are many good grammar books around that one may consult.
To tell a story well and effectively, one must think logically and coherently; literature or literary arts, i.e writing, I daresay, is 99% thinking and only 1% mechanical!
A writer must have a well packaged piece of information, message or story for the intended audience as storytelling through writing is communication. The message or theme of the writer must be clear and concise.
In writing, one must steer clear of unnecessarily long or obscure words aimed at merely impressing (or confusing!) readers.
Though a simple and concise language should always be used, an extensive vocabulary can assist greatly in the task of expressing messages clearly and unambiguously.
A well spelled vocabulary may provide the building blocks for communication but grammar has been described as the mortar which holds them together.
Like a compass, this manual—that draws from various authoritative sources on writing, journalism, communication, storytelling, criticism and grammar—is meant to assist the writer in finding direction and preserving professional consistency.
Initially written as a style guide for writers, reporters and editors of ArtMatters.Info, it is hoped any writer or storyteller will benefit from this manual that is aimed at equipping the user with the common, standard and accepted way of expressing themselves in words and phrases.
The Bolts and Nuts of Writing
Writing is the practice of capturing words, ideas, facts and thoughts on a medium like paper or the computer using symbols like letters of the alphabet in order to communicate with others.
Writing, according to Critical Media Education in African Context, has the following benefits:
• It makes a special contribution to the way people think; this is because when we write, we compose a complex web of meanings of facts and ideas
• It enables us to find and establish our own connections and network
