PREFACE

Jefferson sent a letter to his nephew Peter Carr, who had stayed with him at Monticello, in August of 177. Jefferson was a key ambassador for the fledgling American republic at the time while residing in Paris. Jefferson gave Carr advice on a variety of subjects in the letter, including religion.

Jefferson wrote, Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Even the existence of a deity should be openly questioned since, if there is one, he or she must prefer rational worship to fear-induced blindness."

Question with boldness. Those words captivated me right away. They seem to be ingrained in my soul. And ever since I first read them many years ago, I have done my best to live by them. I believe that is one of the reasons why a substantial portion of my audience has respect for the job that my team and I have completed over the previous several decades.

Of course, being bold in your questions may also be risky. Many individuals in positions of authority wish that I and tens of millions of other Americans would simply quiet up and follow instructions. After all, doing so would make it much simpler for the ruling class to accomplish its objective of further consolidating its power and riches over the rest of society. Given that the causes of many of the world's issues have been kept secret from the public, asking questions is one of the most crucial things any American can do right now.
