Who Am I | Identity in Christ - Pastor Vincent

    Objective of this Book

I became a Christian in my early years at university. As I turned my new life towards Christ, I begun to shed off some of shackles of the past. Although my life changed, I still felt like God just was not there as some things never changed. Why do I always go back to my old habits – I kept asking myself. The bible says, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has comes. But here I, asking the question, why am I not feeling like a new creation?

A couple of unanswered prayers, a series of disappointing events, financial challenges, made me think like God has checked out of my life. I spent years trying to make sense of God’s love, my significant and acceptance in Christ—all in light of the forces of this world.

I become engrossed in trying to understand ‘who am I in Christ’? Was I embracing who the master designer God has created me to be? I am what God says I am! I researched this topic reading all books I could get hold of about identify in Christ and listening to podcasts, and YouTube for related topics. I concluded that even for the most seasoned Christian, truly embracing our identity in Christ can be a genuine struggle.

The greatest tragedy in life is that so many of us spend our lives trying to earn something we already have, the gift of life which God freely gives us when we decide to follow Christ. God never gives up on us. He remains steadfast in His desire to bless us, even when many of us are tempted to doubt His love.

I have discovered that it is only in discovering who God is and who I am in His Christ that transformation of your mind can begin to take shape (Rom 12:2). Do you know who you are in Christ? Do you experience your special place in God’s family?

I hope this revelation from the Word on who you are in Christ will make a big impression and lasting change in your life; and that it will totally change the way you look at your identity and your deepest party of you will say: I am loved, I am Significant, and I am Accepted.

How would you respond if I asked you to describe your identity?

Who are you? Your personal identity is commonly defined by your family role or job description. (I am a mom, or I am a teacher, etc.) It also includes your personality traits, hobbies, likes and dislikes, etc. But these are just facts about you that change throughout your life. Your identity in Christ could not be more different! The life we have as believers means our old self died, and He has made us completely new! This is one of the most important questions Christians should ask themselves.

While our world encourages you to look within yourself for your identity, your natural tendency is to search for your identity in external things.

One of the first places that you can be tempted to look to is your career. Spending your time and energy pursuing your career can cause you to feel like it is a defining characteristic of who you are. After all, a job that you are dedicated to is likely to take up most of your time and attention.

Jobs and careers are intricately connected to other places where you can search for your identity, such as financial success and status. But it does not stop there. We also ask our relationship statuses, appearance, grades, and reputation to provide a sense of identity.

Any or all of these may feel like solid foundations, but none of them are permanent. Any of them could change without warning. If you base your identity on things like success, wealth, power, physical appearance, and so on, you are setting yourself up for great disappointment. A sudden job loss could leave you questioning your choices in life. One piece of gossip aimed your way could destroy your reputation, even if it is untrue. Your appearance will change as you get older.

God, however, is unchanging. He is reliable. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. If you find your identity in Him, you will never ultimately be let down because He has proven repeatedly to be trustworthy.

It is important, as you define your identity, that God is not just an aspect of who you are, like I am a Christian,
