What Caused the US Civil War?

Does one cause, slavery, adequately explain the coming of the US Civil War?

Based on the readings of Charles & Mary Beard, Carl Degler and Allan Nevins, slavery did cause the US Civil War. However, sectionalism and racism were also culprits in the split of the nation.

According to Allan Nevins the US Civil War was not caused just by slavery, but by its complimentary problem of race adjustment. (Nevins:411) He espouses that neither side was willing to give anything away to reach a resolution. If slavery was not a black and white issue there would not have been such a problem. There were those who thought slavery would die out but it did not. In fact, it was not even close to abolition. It was further from the fact than when the dehumanizing tradition started. They would not adopt the new outlook which the upward march of mankind required because they saw that the gradual abolition of slavery would usher in a measure of economic equality; that on the come a rising social status for the Negro. Southern leadership dared not to ask the people to pay this price (Nevins:412). From that, one not only sees his argument, but how it is only part of the bigger picture. Racism and prejudice were key components but, the North was not composed of only abolitionists, nor Quakers. So it was a double sided issue, neither the North nor the South was free of racism or prejudice, neither still is today.

Charles and Mary Beard strongly believe that it was only the sectional issues that divided the nation into war. The Beard’s continue to espouse, sectionalist issues date back to the origins of the country. The beliefs of the North and South were so different that they could not be resolved. The representatives in the government were so loyal to sectional ties that if they voted for another way of life, they were in essence shunning the way that they themselves lived. The slaveholding class has become a governing power in each of the slaveholding states and it practically chooses thirty of the sixty-two members of the Senate, ninety of the two hundred thirty-three members of the House of Representatives, and one hundred and five of the two hundred and ninety-five electors of the President and Vice-President of the United States. (Beard:362) Either way one sees it, if only half vote one way in a majority party rules government, no one is going to win on any front and the problem remains unresolved.

The opposing views of the North and South stemmed from their separate and

distinct economic bases and ways of life. The South had been an agricultural base for the United States since its inception. The North was strictly merchant and business class until, the Industrial Revolution when it partly became the Industrial core of the iron and steel works. The high protective tariffs, ship subsidies, and the national banks were all geared toward the North to maintain its existence. With the South opposed to tariffs, the National Bank, and the ship subsidies the start of the gaps in the national unity began. When the US Supreme Court made its ruling on the Dred Scott vs Sandford case, in which Dred Scott, a slave, sued for his own freedom, espousing that since his master had moved around to several states, some of them free, that Dred Scott be freed. That line of thinking outraged the southern Chief Justice Roger Taney, a strong believer in slaveholding, and he passed the ruling that states, African Americans free or slave could not sue because they were not citizens of the United States. The Missouri Compromise of 1820, in which all land above 36 30’ are free, all below slave, was unconstitutional, and all of the territory gained from the Mexican War, 1846-1848 was now slave territory. By changing all the territories to slave, the US

Supreme Court tried to give the South the needed push to control the US

government.

Sectionalism was another of the culprits that became a catalyst for the US

Civil War. Sectional issues date back to the conflict over the First National Bank all the way until the classifications of the newly acquired territories from the Mexican War. Sectionalism was that the people from different regions took different stands on certain issues because of their ties with their home soil. The sectional tensions ran very deep int the history of the country so that they really could undermine national unity.

Others believe the US Civil War was caused by other factors than sectional issues. Carl Degler believes that the sole cause of the US Civil War was one thing, slavery. Slavery has been around since the United States was under English control. Degler also states that when Eli Whitney invented the Cotton Gin in 1793, the slave trade caught on within the agricultural sector. The South was really only part of the Union that slavery saved from economic destruction. With the increase in cotton production and its transfer into a cash crop, the demand for slaves increased. In the US Constitution, the importation of slaves was supposed to cease in 1808. With the market being cut off, the prices and profitability of

slaves was on the continual rise. Indeed, given the profits being returned by slave plantations it is hard to imagine how slavery would have ended without a war(Degler:181). Another indicator of the profitability of slavery was Thomas Govan whose net worth, jumped from $2.8 to $6.2 billion dollars between 1850

and 1860. Slavery was the backbone of the Southern economy and if it was terminated the South would go to shambles.

Slavery was not practiced by every person in the South. The 1860 US Census reported that there were 1.6 million white families in the South and of those 384,000 owned a slave. 99% owned 100 or less slaves but there were fourteen millionaires that owned 500 or more. (Degler:178). There were 384,000 people that owned 4 — 4.3 million slaves. If slavery was abolished, the free labor they had become so accustomed to having, would be replaced with wage earners. Not all people thought slavery was morally correct but as one concerned farmer stated I wouldn’t like to hev ‘em freee, if they gwine to hang around… because they is so monstrous lazy… Now suppose they was free, you see they’d all think of themselves just as good as we… How’d you like to hev some nigger steppin’up to your darter? Of course you wouldn’t; and that’s the reason I wouldn’t like to hev ‘em free; but I tell you, I don’t think it’s right to hev ‘em slaves so; that’s the fac—taant right to keep ‘em as they is. (Degler:182) The dilemma was, it they were not slaves, what were they going to be? The effects of racism and bigotry became so bad that William Bass volunteered to become a slave too. Degler continues to espouse that slavery was so inbred to southern whites and African American slaves, that the discontinuance of slavery would destroy the South economically, socially, and psychologically.

My personal thought is that all the writers are correct, in that sectionalism, racism, and slavery all caused the coming of the US Civil War. The diversity of the opinions on the Second Bank War with the North for and the South against, continued up until the Dred Scott decision. If two people/groups are constantly at each other’s throats and constantly pitted head to head they will end up in a fight sooner or later, it’s just human nature. Neither side was willing to give a little to save a lot. Their views, opinions, and ways of life were from two totally different spectrums.

Abraham Lincoln once made this statement to try to put everyone at ease. "let us discard all this quibbling about this man and the other — race and that race,

and the other race being inferior …. Let us discard all these things, and unite as one people, throughout this land, until we shall once more stand up declaring that all men are created equal.(Degler:201). Then he comes back to the sign of the times, outright and blatant racism, in relation to the principle that all men are created equal, let it be as nearly as we can."(Degler:201). Racism was not solved by the US Civil War but the South was a lot more racist than the North.

Southerners went all they way to the extent of denying the right for free African-Americans to take residence in Tennessee and Louisiana. The white population was scared of a free black person. They did not want them as their equals and needed them as a source of free labor. They did not know what to do with them.

For a few southerners hated the Negro so much as those whose economic position was almost indistinguishable from that of slaves. Even non-slaveholders who happened to abhor the institution for moral or economic reasons were often silenced by slavery’s undoubted ability to control the Negroes (Degler:181).

All of these ideas had the same base idea of slavery as the cause and overall all things considered, slavery did cause the US Civil War, but it was not without other factors, including sectionalism, different ways of life, and differing economic bases causing one region to be more sound than the other.

What if they were all forced to do it the same way?

And have the same revision, no matter what they believe So we’re gonna have a solitary unity in thought
