#1 As the Roys approached the end of the exit, Christine noticed two cars off to the right side of the road. It looked like an accident. The driver of the blue car had sped off. Someone had to stay with Brendan. So when Steven stopped the car to let Christine out, she ran toward the man, thinking he was still alive and in need of help.

#2 When Christine and the other woman saw the man lying in the road, they didn’t know if he was dead or alive. They asked an EMT to do CPR on him, but he said there was no way he was going to do that. Steven ran up and began touching the man, and said he was dead.

#3 Detective Mike Foley, of the Eastern District Major Crime Squad, in Norwich, Connecticut, had always been a careful cop. He and his colleagues, Detective Peter Cleary and Donny Richardson, had gone out for pizza at a local East Lyme restaurant.

#4 When Officer Joe Dunn arrived at the scene, he saw that the man had been shot. He realized that the man was Buzz Clinton, a local hustler in town he had had some contact with on several occasions.

When Christine and the other woman saw the man lying in the road, they didn’t know if he was dead or alive. They asked an EMT to do CPR on him, but he said there was no way he was going to do that. Steven ran up and began touching the man, and said he was dead.

    #3

Detective Mike Foley, of the Eastern District Major Crime Squad, in Norwich, Connecticut, had always been a careful cop. He and his colleagues, Detective Peter Cleary and Donny Richardson, had gone out for pizza at a local East Lyme restaurant.

When Officer Joe Dunn arrived at the scene, he saw that the man had been shot. He realized that the man was Buzz Clinton, a local hustler in town he had had some contact with on several occasions.

    #5

Officer Joe Dunn had spoken with Buzz back in January, only weeks ago. Buzz had been drinking. He’d been fighting with his wife, the former Kim Carpenter, and her family over custody of their daughter, Rebecca. Things were getting out of hand with his in-laws.

    #6

The state police were called to the scene. They took charge of the investigation, and began questioning witnesses. They were looking for any possible pieces of evidence left behind by the killer or killers.

    #7

The scene at the Bridal Mall was a blur to Christine and Steven Roy. They had come upon the scene of a murder as it was winding down, and possibly even seen the murderer drive away.

    #8

The connector was a parking lot by this point. Cops were still roaming around, asking questions, not letting motorists pass. Dee was content to wait for traffic to move again. Kim, her daughter-in-law, would have to understand.

    #9

The first person at a crime scene can change the entire scope of the investigation. The detective interviewing Christine was a bit more relaxed, and she explained what she saw. However, she couldn’t remember what appeared to be the most significant piece of information available to detectives at this point: the make, model, and license plate number of, possibly, the murderer’s vehicle.

    #10

Turner knew exactly where to look for what he wanted when he approached a crime scene. He took out a camera and began snapping photographs of the car,
