Introduction
(or, Why So Many Questions?
)
Questions are the building blocks of knowledge.
The first humans had to ask questions such as How do I keep warm?
, Where can I find food?
, or Where can I hide from that lion?
. Answering these questions was vital to their survival.
In our modern times, we are not nearly as concerned with daily survival needs as we are with making our lives happy and meaningful. Accordingly, happiness and meaning is often proportionate to the strength of our interpersonal relationships with family and friends. We are dependent upon each other for physical and emotional support both sociologically and psychologically. The stronger our interpersonal bonds are, the healthier we become as individuals.
In my practice as a psychologist, I have witnessed how essential communication is in interpersonal relationships. Many family difficulties are the result of a breakdown in communication between husband and wife or parents and children. These problems can lead to further difficulties, including breaches in trust. Healthy families are those that are able to communicate their thoughts and feelings to each other openly and genuinely.
The questions in this book are designed to tap into our beliefs, thoughts, and feelings. Some questions are meant to delve into emotional issues while others were intended to stir up old memories that give our current life perspective and meaning. Furthermore, some questions are more philosophical in nature, intended to give us perspective into our thoughts and feelings concerning events and circumstances in the world around us.
