Chapter One
You know the twins Lyla and Graham, and their best friend Keith. They live in a tall building in Chicago.
Chicago Lake Michigan view from Hancock The twins are on the third floor, and Keith lives on the top floor. From there, they can see the shining waters of Lake Michigan.
Do you know,
said Keith one day when they were looking out the windows, when explorers first came to Lake Michigan, it's so big they thought it was the sea, and you could sail across it to China!
Keith always knew things like that!
A view of Lake Michigan. It's enormous!
Last year, the friends all went to England with the twins' Grammy Louise who is British and a writer. They stayed in a castle and had an adventure, apart from learning all sorts of things about what life used to be like when the castle was built. Now they can't wait to go traveling again!
Just today, the twins' mother had received a letter from Grammy Louise. She didn't tell the children about it, because she wanted to talk to Keith's mother first. This is what the letter said:
Dear Claire (that's the twins' mother's name),
I need to go to Paris this summer to do some research for a book I'm writing. It would be for two weeks. My friend Sophie is lending me her apartment in the city, and it has two bedrooms. I wonder if the twins and Keith would like to come? Sophie is a teacher at the University and has a student who would show the children around while I'm at the library. What do you think?
That evening, Claire went upstairs to talk to Keith's Mom. Wow!
she said, what a great invitation! I'd be happy for him to go, if he wants to.
Five Fun Facts on the French Flag | French Affair When their Mom reported this conversation to the twins, they both said, "If he wants to! Of course he will want to! He loves traveling. He's always talking about it!"
So it was agreed, the friends were going to Paris in the summer!

Welcome home! Arriving passengers from Europe have faced lines lasting up to six hours as travelers are forced to enter through 13 designated 'funnel' airports. This was the scene arriving at Chicago O'Hare airport The twins' Dad flew with the friends to New York from Chicago. The places where people get on and off planes inside the airports are called gates. Grammy Louise met them at the gate where their plane from Chicago arrived.
