To all the authors struggling to get their novels written. This too shall pass.
Productivity is being able to do things you were never able to do before.
—Quote Attributed to Franz Kafka
Introduction
What is Writing a Novel Fast... and why is it so Damn Important?
Today’s publishing industry (especially if you’ve set your sights on becoming an indie-author) moves Fast.
I know.
You rolled your eyes so hard they almost fell out of their sockets.
You’ve heard this before.
I bet you think I’m going to say Writing Fast is the only way to be successful.
Well, you’re only half right, my writerly friend, because my definition of Writing Fast might surprise you.
To me, Writing Fast is:
––––––––
Developing a Productive Mindset, a Productive Workspace, and a Productive Writing Process that works FOR YOU!
––––––––
Pay attention to the last two words in that sentence.
FOR YOU!
There’s a ton of advice on Productivity and Writing Fast out there, but I’m always wary of advice prefaced with, YOU MUST...
Some popular writing advice highlights include:
YOU MUST write twelve books a year
YOU MUST write every single day
YOU MUST write following ____________ (Insert process here)
My advice?
Whenever you hear the words YOU MUST, followed by a writing tip, re-frame it in one of two ways:
You could try...
____________ worked for me, and it might work for you, too
And try it.
If it doesn’t work, throw it out and try something else.
Learning How to Write Novels Fast is an iterative process—you won’t find your groove overnight.
I certainly didn’t.
But, given patience, time, and a lot of testing, you can develop all the skills you need to Write Fast in a way you’re comfortable with.
––––––––
Being Productive is Important Because...
Like I said up top, publishing moves Fast these days.
There are authors who:
Can crank out a book a month (or every 2 weeks, sometimes)
Co-write to produce more books
Work together in large publishing collaboratives to build a hefty back-list in record time
Do you need to do these things to be successful?
No... unless you discover that one or more of these approaches works FOR YOU!
Over time, and with tons of trial and error—mostly error, let’s be honest—I’ve developed a Fast
writing process that works for me, and I want to help you do the same thing.
But, wait!
I know what you’re thinking...
Who in the Name of the Literary Gods is This Guy...
...And Why the Hell Should I Listen to Him?
––––––––
Cool your cape and cut the laser-eye-beams there, Superman. Who in the name of the literary gods are you... and why the hell should I listen?
Damn, you’re good at asking questions!
It’s a valid one, though.
I’m Shane, and in 2019, I stopped thinking/talking/internally obsessing about becoming an author and actually did it. In 2022, I published the first four novels in my urban fantasy thriller series, Myth & Magic, under the pen name S. W. Millar. As well as being a writer, I’m a Fictionary Certified StoryCoach, a developmental editor, and an unapologetically nerdy writing craft junkie.
Why this book, and why now?
It took me a
