I bought this book after buying many other books in a similar vein. I'd been trying to write a novel for years and would get so far along, following whichever guide, then would eventually give up. To the reader
First, a thank you, as always, for buying this book. I hope you enjoy it.
Second, it was originally published in 2013. This edition contains a few, minor tweaks — new cover, as you see, and a few additional words, here, plus a chapter in the end about formatting your book for publication. If you’ve followed my plan, finished your book, and now you are ready to self-publish on any of the myriad platforms available to independent authors these days, I can help you there, too.
I’ve learned a lot about formatting and cover design over the past few years, so I’m offering that service also. More about that in the Formatting
chapter, as I say.
Third, there is also a How To Write a Novel in 6 Months Workbook now available, so you can plan, outline, and start drafting your novel. That will help you keep all your information in one place. It contains plenty of blank pages where you can start plotting. I’ve included the grid mentioned in this book which allows you to keep track of your word count. Grab your copy.
OK, now to the part where I ask for your help.
After you have read this book, do you think you would consider leaving a review on your website or any other platform? I am not asking for a 5-star swoon, just an honest, fair opinion of the book.
As you’ll see, nearly 50 readers have reviewed it — and virtually all of them like it a lot and have found it tremendously helpful in their novel-writing journey.
So I do hope you will enjoy it too, and perhaps let me, via Twitter or email, know what you thought, how it helped you, and whether you are writing that novel yet.

Before the beginning
I HAD MY FIRST NOVEL published in 2006. Between then and 2012, I had another seven published. Under the contract I signed with my publisher I agreed to write two books a year. That is two, full-length novels of between 90,000 and 120,000 words. So if you are deciding whether I am qualified to be telling you how you can write a 50,000-word novel in six months, I think I rest my case.
I am not a writing guru
who has never written a novel in their life. I am not a creative writing PhD student who is lecturing you while on the 10th year of writing his or her novel. I am not someone who has had two short stories published on the internet and has a column in a writing magazine, and is at the moment writing their first novel
.
I am bona fide. I have done it.
I am not boasting, and I am not best-selling — but I know what I am talking about.
And I am going to tell you one more thing: you can do it too.
It is not rocket science. If I can do it, so can you. And you don’t need a course or a guru
to tell you how.
There are tons of books out there on how to write a novel. Some are good. Some are bad. There are some that tell you how to write a novel in
