KIRKUS REVIEWS
Spirituality is a prominent theme in the collection, which promotes no one religion, but instead plays with the idea of a universal spirituality. Here, the self is the highest power: all of Little Garlic’s adventures serve to help him uncover his secret star, which bears some resemblance to the idea of a soul.

Introduction
NOT SINCE MISTER ROGERS have we had a work for children that is so purely true, without manipulation and sensationalism. The authentic and the unadorned come together here in a lonely creature’s quest. We are back to simplicity of knowing what a child is, and how that child can be enchanted by elegant imagination.
What children read, children will believe. This book was written so that the young would once again believe in a loving world, one that exists even now beneath our daily surface; a story brought to light with the adventures of Little Garlic.
Little Garlic is born, alone, and alienated. However, the kindness of others brings him to understanding about what the world contains, and how he can be nourished by guided experiences.
Children’s literature has taken us into every passage of human conduct but seems to have lost the essence of our original intent for children—bringing them from innocence to growth, and then to loving impressions of a fulfilled life.
In simple language, and clear action, this book will take us once more into the lost lands of fairytale, folklore, and the magic existence of creatures working for the good.

Foreword
AVIDEH SHASHAANI HAS WRITTEN a family story that surpasses the standard of a myth. Here, welcome into a timeless spiritual parable, as old as the protagonist, Little Garlic,
who faces steep challenges to then discover deeper realities, all through a process of peeling back layers of truth by the guide, Onion,
the Virgil of our story.
Shashaani speaks to the child as a wise knower. She engages the child’s deep birthright, of inborn spiritual awareness. Crossing between layers of human reality, this story book has the potency to be a foundational story in a child’s life.
Shashaani joins with the natural wisdom of the child, through the eyes of the protagonist. A journeying Little Garlic naturally sees all living beings as alive and conscious, and so can learn from all beings. Throughout the encounters of the quest, the author accurately honors the child’s capability of knowing and engaging multiple layers of consciousness; the dream world, the companionship and friendship in nature, in a cow or flower, and a timeless spirit or truth.
In offering our children a spiritually grounded journey, Shashaani’s book will strengthen the child’s natural ability to hear, feel, and love the vital surrounding world. She speaks to this place of knowing, the seat of awareness through which the physical order of reality reveals the foundational spiritual reality, where the child finds an enduring home. A centered place to live joyfully, beautifully with companionship, as The Flower, with hope and peace. Here at home in the universe, the child carries true resilience from loss and suffering, even renewal in the face of devastation of family and community or origin, with the felt knowing of being held and loved by life itself.
If a parent reads from this lyrical book several times a week to the young child, who then returns to these vital passages when of reading age, and who should then reach for these well-loved stories as an autonomous middle-school child, it is most likely that for the rest of her or his life, the child will feel the embrace of the goodness in the world, and the door will remain open to the inner passageway to spiritual discovery. And the child’s family will be transformed
