About this ebook

Gene M. Adams has always been drawn to short sayings that can inform us how to live—and Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, gave us plenty of them.

Using Matthew, Mark, and Luke, he found numerous short remarks from Jesus filled with wisdom. Sayings include:

• “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” —Matthew 5:3 (NKJV)
• “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” —Matthew 7:7 (NKJV)
• “For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” —Matthew 9:13 (RSV)

The book includes dozens of other sayings, and the author breaks down each one to explain what Jesus means, why it’s important, and how we can apply its guidance to our daily lives.

Find comfort, ignite your faith, and discover insights that will lead you closer to the Lord with this collection of sayings.

    Why Write About Memorable Sayings?

    Some of My Favorite Sayings

    INTRODUCTION

In churches throughout this land, and in lands beyond our seas, church members hold dearly in their memories given verses that have special meaning. Why does a given verse have special meaning to an individual? There are many reasons why this exists. Perhaps as a young person, an individual learned and memorized a verse such as John 3:16 (NRSV): For God so loved the world that he gave his only son so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. Perhaps someone read a verse during a time of despair and grief which gave the individual support and encouragement; one possibility is Psalm 23:1 (NRSV): The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. As for this writer, my favorite verse in the New Testament is John 10:10b (NRSV): I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. As for the Old Testament, I cherish most Psalm 24:1–6, but more specifically verses 3 and 4 (ESV): Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. These verses, as written here, are what I call memorable sayings. These are verses people memorized that helped them live through the days of their life.

Therefore, I have chosen to look into the Gospels and find memorable words of Jesus which many people hold for encouragement and support. Included in this book are many of these memorable words and sayings. I am sure this collection does not include all the memorable sayings of Jesus which individuals embrace, but these in this writing include many of those sayings. With that in mind, I have titled this document The Memorable Sayings of Jesus.

    TRANSLATIONS

In reading this book, you will discover that I did not follow only one Bible translation. I have used several translations. All of these interpretations say much the same thing; however, sometimes one translation will read more clearly than the others. It is for this reason
