THE HIDDEN

The necessity of residing in the Secret Place and interacting with our all-powerful God.

We'll look at how we might prepare our hearts so that this devotional discipline spills out of our prayer closets and begins to infiltrate every aspect of our life.

Let's start with a quick look at how the Bible portrays the Secret Place, followed by a look at Joshua's life.

THE SECRET REFUGE IS described as a place of protection in Psalm 91.

91:1-10 (Psalms) He who dwells in the Most High's secret chamber will be protected by the Almighty's shadow. I will declare of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God, and I will put my trust in him. He will surely deliver thee from the fowler's trap and the deafening pestilence. His truth shall be thy shield and buckler; he shall cover thee with his feathers, and thou shalt trust under his wings. You must not be afraid of the fear at night, nor of the arrow that flies during the day, nor of the plague that stalks the night, nor of the destruction that wreaks havoc at midday. A thousand will fall at thy left hand, ten thousand at thy right, but none will come close to you. Only with thy eyes will thou witness and perceive the wicked's reward. Because thou hast made the LORD, my refuge, the Most High, thine habitation, no ill shall befall thee, and no plague shall come near thy dwelling.

27:5 (Psalms) He will conceal me in his pavilion in the time of difficulty, in the secret of his tabernacle, and he will raise me up on a rock.

31:20 (Psalms) From man's pride, thou shalt hide them in the covert of thy presence; from tongues' strife, thou shalt keep them quietly in a pavilion.

PROVISION

91:11-13 (Psalms) He will entrust you to his angels, who will keep you safe in all your endeavors. They will carry you up in their arms so that you do not step on a stone. You must step on the lion and the adder, and you must trample the juvenile lion and the dragon.

91:15, 16 (Psalms) He will summon me, and I will respond: I will be with him in danger, and I will deliver and honor him. I will satisfy him with my long life and show him my salvation.

PROMOTION

91:14 in Psalms Because he has fixed his heart on me, I will deliver him; I will exalt him because he has heard of my name.

27:5 (Psalms) He will conceal me in his pavilion in the time of difficulty, in the secret of his tabernacle, and he will raise me up on a rock.

This Secret Place is not exclusive to a select few, but is open to all of us! We will also look at several more allusions to The Secret Place in the Bible during this session.

The Secret Place will also be referred to as the Lord's tabernacle or His pavilion in several of these verses.

Recommendation:

Before continue with this study, you might want to spend a few minutes reading each of the scriptures listed above. This will also provide a solid framework for the rest of this Chapter.

We must never lose sight of the Lord's aim and intention for this area of fellowship and intimacy, even though most of our focus is on what we can personally receive from God in the Secret Place.

In Mark 3:13-15, we can find an illustration of this in the story of Jesus and His disciples.

3:13–15 Mark And he ascendeth up a mountain, calling to whom he will, and they come to him. And he appointed twelve, that they should be with him and that he might send them forth to preach, and that they should have the power to heal diseases and cast out devils:

Before giving His disciples power and authority, Jesus extended an invitation—an invitation to come to Him and be with Him.

This is the same invitation we have today, and this is where we receive power, authority, and influence, as well as an increase in our giftings and anointing.

God wants us to seek these spiritual gifts, as Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 14:1, but we are encouraged to pursue love first.

God is love, says 1 John 4:8. Our pursuit of God must always take precedence above our desire to receive what God has to offer.

The fact is that when we seek Him and begin to pleasure ourselves in Him, He will provide us with not only what we require, but also our deepest desires.

6:33 in Matthew But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and everything else will be added to you.

37:4 (Psalms) Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will grant you your heart's desires.

Let's start with what Jesus stated about the Secret Place in Matthew 6 before we look at how the Bible describes it.

In respect to prayer, the first verse in Matthew 6:6 says: 6:6 Matthew But when you pray, go into your closet and close the door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and thy Father who sees in secret will reward thee openly.

Second, when it comes to fasting, Matthew 6:17-18 says: are two of the most important verses in the Bible. But anoint thyself when thou haste.

So that thou appear not to mankind to fast, but to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

In these two texts, Jesus tells us that our personal dedication to the Lord, demonstrated through periods of prayer and even fasting in the Secret Place, will result in God openly rewarding you.

However, the core of these words is about finding God-in the Secret Place-rather than being publically rewarded.

Maintaining this perspective and nurturing this understanding will continue to build in us a posture that allows us to reside in the Secret Place of the Most High.

We notice three characteristics in Psalm 91:14-16 that touch God's heart on our behalf:

A deep and abiding love for God

Increasing our understanding of God Our search for God

Let's look at this paragraph first, and then we'll describe these three attributes and discuss how to cultivate each of them in our own life.
