Wavy Adventures: Getting Shelly Home

"Wavy Adventures" tells the story of Jay and Isabella – two siblings who recently move back to Shell Island after losing their mother. Jay has a difficult time adjusting to his new life until a magical dolphin named Shelly enters his life. He learns he as a special connection with Shelly, but he doesn't know what it is until he meets Rusty (inspired by real life Marine Mammal Activist, Russ Rector) and Victoria. Although it seems like they have settled in to their new lives, trouble strikes, and the group of friends must embark on an adventurous journey like no other!

In this story, Jay, Isabella and their new friends go on an adventure to get Shelly back to her magical superpod. But it isn't exactly smooth sailing… they run into some trouble at sea with pirates! Just when Jay thinks all hope is lost, he starts to believe that he has a greater purpose on this island. Will they get Shelly home before the pirates capture her or will their family's past hold them back?

Linda Rector’s Dedication: Russ Rector / Rusty - My husband of 47 years - was a dolphin trainer when we first met in 1970. Then, after leaving that role, he devoted his time fighting for the rights of dolphins and whales in captivity and the wild. He wasn’t everyone’s favorite person, but he was true to the cause and to himself in order to make a huge impact on world views. With many years of speaking to young school children with truths about the conditions these animals lived in, he knew this knowledge would sway the captivity/welfare issues for future generations. Chapter 1

As Special As You

Far, far away from a magical island, something special made its way across the sea. Who would have thought that something so small would have such a huge impact? The beach always felt magical to Jay. It was where his mother took him and his sister every weekend. They always met with family and friends there. It was a place of peace and serenity―a place of adventure and happiness, and a place of hopes and dreams. 

This is exactly where I’m supposed to be, Jay thought to himself. The scent of the sea blew across his nose. The feeling of the waves and the sand between his toes were comforting. The sound of the crashing waves and the seagulls soaring through the beautiful blue sky were refreshing.

SPLASH! Jay came out from beneath an enormous wave holding a unique seashell. Mom! Look what I found. He swam out of the ocean and ran to his mother and aunt. What kind of seashell is this? he asked his mother. 

It can’t be. she said softly. 

What is it, Mom? Jay asked as he hovered over her. 

It looks like a shell I found when I was a little girl. It’s called the Spinning Seashell. It’s very special to my family on the island. she said.

After admiring its beauty, she gently took the seashell and grabbed string from her beach bag. There was a hole in the seashell as if it were meant to be worn as a necklace. She put the string through the shell and placed it around Jay’s neck, It’s as special as you, big man. Jay promised his mom that he would never take that necklace off. He went back into the water to find more treasures. Suddenly, out of nowhere, lightning flashed across the sky and thunder rumbled in the distance. Jay’s mom began to pack up their belongings and called for Jay and his sister, Isabella, to head home.
