A contra-indication refers to any condition that either prevents a treatment being carried out or will require the treatment to be adapted. You must thoroughly question the client during consultation to ascertain if any contra-indications are present, so that treatment can be delayed or adapted as necessary.
As a therapist you are not qualified to diagnose, but if any condition is suspected, you must advise the client to seek medical advice. If you miss-inform the client, they could treat the condition with the wrong medication and your insurance would not cover you. Please refer the NHS sight as attached for additional information - http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/skinproblems.aspx
Contra-indications which could prevent a treatment are: -
Skin disease or infections (see contagious conditions)
Eye infections
Undiagnosed swellings
Skin inflammation or sunburn
Severe eczema or psoriasis in area
Unfavourable reaction to patch test
Contra-indications that could restrict a treatment are: -
Open cuts/abrasions (cover with waterproof dressing and would not work over these areas)
Recent operations (usually wait 6 months or would seek GP approval)
Recent fractures or sprains (usually wait 6 months or would seek GP approval)
Lack of tactile sensation (care would need to be taken with pressure used)
Bruising (would not work over bruised area
Warts or moles (would not work over them)
Recent scar tissue (would not work over this area)
Hypersensitive skin or history of intolerance (a patch test of products would need to be carried out 24 hours prior to treatment)
There are always exceptions to the rule and a therapist must use her common sense and discretion. If ever in doubt politely refuse treatment and refer client to GP.
It is important that contaminated waste should not be disposed of with normal rubbish. It must be collected separately, there are many private companies that you can pay for this service.
COSMETIC MAKE-UP CONTRA ACTIONS
A contra action is a situation which occurs as a result of the treatment.
For make-up this could take the form of -
An allergic reaction - whereby the area becomes itchy, red swollen or blistered. If this occurs, remove as much product as possible, bathe the area with cool damp cotton wool and apply a soothing substance. If severe seek GP advice.

COSMETIC MAKE UP
Clients will usually book in for cosmetic make up either for a special occasion, such as a wedding, when they really want their make up to look well applied and to last all day, or often a client will have never before experimented with make up at all.
If a client has never worn make up, it is pointless to give a heavily made up look. They will feel un-natural and uncomfortable with it. Similarly it is unwise to radically change a client who is quite set in their ways, you need to ascertain what type of look they usually go for, and any changes you feel are necessary will have to be made cautiously and tactfully. Also if the client has areas of their face they are not happy with, i.e. nose too big, heavy jaw etc, you will need to be very tactful in showing them how these areas can be minimised. Always ask the client, which areas she is not happy with first, rather than suggesting areas which need correction.
Getting the balance right for bridal make up can be quite difficult. You need the make up to be heavy enough to look right in the photographs, but the bride
