About this ebook

For twelve-year-old Bristol, being on the slopes means ultimate freedom. As an adaptive snowboarder and a junior instructor, the upcoming PowderX Games are a chance to show her parents how serious she is about the sport. But juggling boarding and teaching with homework and vision therapy for her vergence insufficiency is harder than Bristol thought. When her parents announce that she’ll have to drop some of her snowboarding commitments if she doesn’t do well on an important exam, Bristol is determined to prove that she can do it all. On the day of the Games, it takes a reminder from one of her students—and a tough personal choice—to help Bristol figure out the perfect balance both on and off the slopes.

Snowboard Balancing Act - Jake Maddox

    CHAPTER 1

    PURE POWDER

    Bristol! Help!

With a shower of powder, Bristol Budnikas halted in front of the other boarder. You okay, Jamila?

The little girl rolled over. I wiped out! Jamila declared proudly. She sat up and spit out a mouthful of snow.

Bristol grinned. When Jamila had first started lessons, she’d been scared of the slopes. She’d worried about trying even the bunny hill without holding on to someone. Now her confidence—and daring— seemed to grow every week.

You’re doing great, Bristol said proudly. Just remember to keep your weight a little more centered, okay? Now, come on. Last one back buys hot chocolate!

Jamila returned the grin and grabbed Bristol’s outstretched glove. How about the coach buys hot chocolate? she joked.

Bristol felt a flash of pride at the word coach. She had been snowboarding her whole life. She’d practically grown up on the mountain. But when she was nine, she’d been in a car accident that caused a head injury. She’d mostly recovered—except for some lasting vergence dysfunction.

Ever since, Bristol had battled vision issues— including on the mountain. Her eyes could stay steady and focused for a short amount of time, especially looking at things up close. But eventually they tried to go in opposite directions.

It could be a real hassle—eye fatigue, headaches, double vision, trouble judging how far away things were. It even threw off her balance sometimes. The customized goggles Bristol wore had special lenses that helped her eyes maintain focus when she had to glance between obstacles on the slopes. They helped some, but it wasn’t a perfect fix.

It had taken Bristol a long time to adjust to boarding with her new limitations. But she’d done it. Maybe she couldn’t be as fast or aggressive on the slopes as she once was, but she was working on it.

And now she was helping other kids. This was her first year as a junior volunteer coach with the Tiny Titans, Roman Run’s adaptive skiing and snowboarding program for kids.

Bristol handed Jamila her outrigger poles. They had tiny skis on the bottom that gave extra support for skiers or boarders who needed help balancing.

    Don’t forget these! she said.

I bet I won’t need them for long! Jamila declared.

Especially now that you’ve got your fancy new leg, Bristol agreed. Did you decide on some stickers to decorate it?

Jamila had gotten a new leg from her prosthetist last week. She had been so excited to show everyone how lightweight and high-tech it was. Most importantly, it was pink—Jamila’s favorite color.

Together, Bristol and Jamila cruised back to the rest of the group.

Nice wipeout, Jamila! Greta, the head coach, said. She grinned and poked the bobble of Jamila’s fuzzy hat. Then she turned to Bristol. "I was just telling the kids about that sweet tripod you did the other day. They want a demo!"

Show us! Aurora piped up, bouncing on her tiny blue skis.

Jyoti, the junior coach paired with Aurora, steadied the little girl. It was just Aurora’s fourth time skiing. She was still getting the hang of keeping her balance on her left side, which was weaker than her right while on skis.

The other kids joined in. Show! Show!

Bristol gave in, laughing. Okay, okay.

She undid one binding and towed her board to a smooth stretch of snow a little way up the slope. Then she locked back in and started down the hill.

Bristol picked up speed, sliding on her toe edge, then turned until she was facing uphill.
