Insights from Chapter 1
#1
The team members were experts in their selected specialties, but they cross-trained in all areas. The two Air Force servicemen who joined us came from different units and had different specialties, but their primary mission was to call in close air support.
Insights from Chapter 2
#1
The movie 12 Strong is based on a true story, but the real story is even more dramatic. It is bloody, patriotic, idealistic, and filled with action.
#2
The American mission in Afghanistan was to assist the leaders of the Afghan resistance who were already attempting to overthrow the Taliban. The most optimistic assessments saw months of fighting, with heavy attrition, but it didn’t turn out that way.
#3
The assault was going well, until the Taliban brought in a truck-mounted rocket launcher to bear on the advancing Afghan militiamen. The momentum of the battle changed, and the Americans began to retreat.
Insights from Chapter 3
#1
The American military features special operations units in each branch: Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force. Green Berets are experts in guerrilla or unconventional warfare, and are selected and trained to teach it.
#2
The term Green Beret is a nickname that originated from the headgear that the first Special Forces units adopted. It is believed that Captain Frank Dallas took the model and created the beret, which was immediately controversial.
#3
Army Special Forces is divided into groups rather than traditional divisions or regiments. Each group ordinarily works in a specific part of the world, developing relationships with the governments, military, and people there.
