    The Family is Shattered

"Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir the son of Ammiel from Lodabar."

    2 Samuel 9:5

Once upon a time, in a land far away lived a man with a wife and an infant daughter. The town was Lodabar, a desolate, isolated city where there was much crime and poverty. The man was Latrell Blue, a woodsman; his wife was Cleo and his baby daughter was the beautiful Cinderella. Although the Blue family was poor, they were happy and ate food from a wonderful vegetable garden planted by Cleo and Latrell.

The year is 1992. Although Lodabar is in the rural Kingdom of King Arthur, they have electricity, automobiles, televisions and cell phones.

Cleo and Latrell loved little Cinderella as she grew into childhood. At age 12, Mamma Cleo became ill. It was a very sad time for Cinderella and Latrell. Before Cleo went to heaven, she gave Cinderella a musical flute and the name of a woman in the Amoretti Mountain who could teach her to play.

My dear Cinderella, learn to play this flute the best you can. Develop your talents and get out of Lodabar. I think this instrument will take you to a better life. Go to this address in the Amoretti Mountains and ask for Madame Fairy. I have arranged for her to give you lessons on this instrument. Remember that I will always love you.

Within days, Mamma Cleo bowed her head and went to heaven in her sleep. Cinderella cried at her bedside, consoled only by her father who was weary from hard work.

Not far away on the other side of Lodabar was an evil woman named Tremaine Simple who lived with her two daughters, Drizzella and Anastasia near the railroad tracks. Tremaine spent all of her time looking for a man to take them away from the railroad tracks to a better side of Lodabar. Tremaine hung out at the bars and nightclubs, searching for men who passed through town, to no avail.

We’re running out of money, Girls. I don’t know what we’re going to do.

Can you find a job, Mother? said Drizzella.

No! You’re my job. I’m supposed to be nobility. I can’t be seen out working for people. One of us has got to get a husband who can get us out of Lodabar! As they sat down to dinner, Drizzella spoke highly of her boyfriend from school.

I love Galli. He’s tall and handsome and so good to me. One day when he finishes college, he will marry me. Then we can all move to Moon-soul.

Don’t make me laugh, Drizzella! Dump that loser! We can’t wait for your poor, fatherless boyfriend to deliver us from this situation.

What do you mean, Mother? Don’t talk about Galli like that.

"His mother is Elaine of Corbenic. She has no husband. That’s

not what I want for you. I want you to marry into a royal family; a rich family; a member of King Arthur’s court! You’re not going to waste your youth and beauty on Galli! Now eat your food while we figure out what to do."

There’s a girl in my class whose mother went to heaven last week. Her name is Cinderella Blue. I’m not sure what her father’s name is, other than Mr. Blue. He is a carpenter with a successful business. Maybe you can wander into the woods and carry his lunch, Mother. said Anastasia.

Now you’re talking. I think I’ll prepare a basket of fish and chips and pay Mr. Blue a visit tomorrow.

After the funeral and for the next six months, Lady Tremaine visited Latrell Blue every day, carrying lunch providing polite conversation about what
