    CHAPTER ONE

    NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

    THE HEART OF THE MATTER

The heart of the matter is a matter of the heart. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life (Proverbs 4:23). In every nation there are challenges of poverty, corruption, hatred, murder, divorce, suicide, wars, environmental degradation, insecurity, and terrorism. All these evils originate from the hearts of men. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies (Matt 15:19). If the heart is the source of evil, then evil will cease if man has a new heart.

As a result of man’s corrupt nature, he has an intrinsic proclivity to harm his neighbour, either by speech or action for selfish interest. No man is exempt from this unethical tendency. Even the most decent of men struggle with corrupt desires inside them.

In infants, this sinful nature is present like a seed that is yet to sprout. The degree of manifestation of human corruption is different in every man. For some, it is stealing, and for others it is murder, sexual immorality, witchcraft, greediness etc.

While the Bible teaches that unrighteousness is inherent in all homo-sapiens, contemporary secular humanists boldly preach the essential goodness of man, giving rise to the pursuit of self-actualization and hero-worship. These philosophy blind men from seeing the salvation, God offers in the Holy Bible.

If a man is so good as they claim, why is there so much wickedness in society? Anyone that says, it is the uneducated that commit these atrocities, must be living in another planet. There are countless number of highly educated people that are criminals in our society.

I remember the story of a university professor and husband of a government minister, who was caught having sexual intercourse with another lady in his car. At that level of human achievement, one would hardly expect such a low behaviour.

A look at the rise and fall of empires in history will reveal the great wickedness that kings, princes, and the nobles have committed. Subtle killings and the undoing of one another for position and power are rife among the aristocrats in society. Education, therefore, is no cure for the depravity in human nature. Doubtless, schooling can produce some civility, but it is unable to tame the evil passions in men’s heart. Information alone does not lead to good behaviour.

    MISSING THE MARK

The Bible calls this immoral inclination existing in the heart, sinfulness. Sin is the English equivalent of the Hebrew word, ‘Chata’, which means, ‘to miss’. We have sinned whenever our deeds miss the mark, God has set for human behaviour. Sin is misconduct, a transgression of divine rules and there are consequences for every disobedience.

In further defining sin, we must understand that God created man in his image. Man is the image of God. Whatever you do to that image, you are doing to the owner. Therefore, an act against your fellowman is a sin against God.

A man who does not believe in God refers
