The question of what is wings good for is an example of how we must go beyond dreams of blissful floating among mythical clouds and come down to earth. In a Darwinian world, survival is only a means to the end of reproduction.

The process of survival is not individual, but genetic. The good genes survive and reproduce, while the bad ones don’t. Good genes are those that build bodies that are good at surviving and reproducing, and they pass on those same genes.
