#1 On August 21, 2015, I was the CEO of a fast-growing media company called Yellowhammer, which began as my blog when I was a student at the University of Alabama. I focused on state politics and the behind-the-scenes machinations of lawmakers. My biggest weekly feature was Rumors and Rumblings, giving the scoop on what was really going on inside the Alabama State House.
#2 I was nervous about interviewing Trump. His polling numbers showed he was going to win the state, but I was still concerned about his popularity. I wanted to ask him about his past positions and whether he’d change them if he became president.
#3 Trump also said he was very pro-choice, but also claimed he had changed his stance because of two friends who had gotten abortions and their child turned out well.
#4 I was more aligned with Ted Cruz, a rock-ribbed conservative who’d been giving the party establishment fits since getting elected to the Senate a few years before. I was concerned about these character questions, though. During an event organized by several faith-based organizations, Trump had identified himself as a Protestant, but when asked whether he had ever felt inclined to ask God for forgiveness, his answer raised eyebrows.

I focused on state politics and the behind-the-scenes machinations of lawmakers. I was nervous about interviewing Trump. His polling numbers showed he was going to win the state, but I was still concerned about his popularity. I wanted to ask him about his past positions and whether he’d change them if he became president.
#3
Trump also said he was very pro-choice, but also claimed he had changed his stance because of two friends who had gotten abortions and their child turned out well.
#4
I was more aligned with Ted Cruz, a rock-ribbed conservative who’d been giving the party establishment fits since getting elected to the Senate a few years before. I was concerned about these character questions, though. During an event organized by several faith-based organizations, Trump had identified himself as a Protestant, but when asked whether he had ever felt inclined to ask God for forgiveness, his answer raised eyebrows.
#5
Trump’s marketing genius was shown to me during my time working for him. The phrase Make America Great Again was perhaps the most brilliant piece of political branding in modern American history. It tapped into a deep-seated belief and anxiety among many Americans that the country they had grown up in was slipping away from them.
#6
In March 2016, a source gave me a thumb drive containing audio recordings of then-governor Robert Bentley and his senior adviser Rebekah Caldwell Mason, allegedly having an extramarital affair.
#7
I made the recordings and gave them to the press. They were published, and the story was international news within the hour. It consumed Alabama for weeks.
#8
I was a conservative Republican, but I was still shocked by the response to the banner at the football game. It seemed like political correctness had become even more of a problem in 2016.
#9
I came across a pseudonymous essay titled The Flight 93 Election in The Claremont Review of Books, published by the conservative think tank the Claremont Institute. It was driving a lot of conversation online.
#10
I was a conservative, but I was also deeply concerned about the country’s trajectory. I was considering whether I wanted to join Trump’s campaign, and I called Senator Sessions for advice. He was excited about the prospect of me joining.
#11
I was initially reluctant to join the Trump team, but after prayer and consideration, I decided that if I could have any influence on the campaign, even a small one,
