About this ebook

This song is warm, and so are you,

You are so bright and lovely too.

Your touch is light and full of glee,

You shine on me so happily.

I feel your presence everywhere,

Your rays, your joy, your gentle glare.

Your energy is so divine,

You

    THE BOX OF EMOTIONS

Your emotions make you human. Even the unpleasant ones have a purpose. Don’t lock them away. If you ignore them, they just get louder and angrier.

    —Sabaa Tahir

It was the beginning of the school week, and Spirit had mixed feelings about going back to school after a weekend. One part of her was excited about new adventures at school, and the other part was a bit anxious about what was to come. On the bus ride to school, Spirit had a strange feeling that she was forgetting something, but she couldn’t remember what it was. That made her feel uneasy.

When she arrived in the classroom and sat at her desk, she saw her friend Blaze taking a stuffed penguin out of his backpack.

Oh no! I forgot about Show and Tell, she quietly said to Blaze. Spirit had promised Blaze that she would bring her favorite stuffed polar bear, Aurora, to class.

I can’t tell the class about the North Pole today. She was sad that she’d forgotten Aurora at home.

After that, the whole school day was ruined by her emotional overload. Spirit couldn’t pay attention to the teacher. She felt very overwhelmed, and she couldn’t express herself in words.

On the bus ride home, she was very quiet despite the noise other children were making. She didn’t want to talk to anyone and silently stared out the window. Why is the bus going so slow today? I just want to get home.

After the bus finally arrived at Spirit’s home, she ran out as quickly as she could. Mama was already waiting for her on the porch. Spirit ran straight to Mama and wrapped her arms around her very tightly.

Mama knew right away that something was up.

"Let’s sit under your favorite tree in the backyard. I’d like to hear about your feelings, and maybe you could
