A CHRISTMAS CORGI
BY JENNY MARIE TAYLOR
NOVEMBER 19
I am a good listener.
I know this because my first owner, Miss Loretta, told me so every day. She was very old and didn't have many friends, so I would sit in her lap and listen to her tell stories of her life. Sometimes her stories were very long, and I wanted to play outside, but it made her so happy to pet my head and talk to me. So I listened.
Right after my first birthday, Miss Loretta got sick. She had to lay in bed all day. Strangers came in and out to take care of her. It was a scary time. I don't like to think about it.
Soon after that, Miss Loretta stopped telling stories, then she stopped talking at all. They took her away in a big bag, and I spent all day waiting at the door for her to come home.
But she didn't. Instead, a man named Rick showed up. I met him before. He seemed very nice and very quiet. He came with a new lady, Lillian. I was excited because she had a poofy scarf around her neck, and she smelled like flowers.
Lillian shooed me away when I jumped on her and sat at Miss Loretta’s table full of papers. She shuffled through the papers for a long time, while Rick sat on the couch. He looked sad, so I gave him kisses while Lillian huffed and moved papers around.
This is a complete mess, Rick. Didn't you ever check on your mother?
Of course I did. Mom was an accountant. I assumed she had taken care of these things.
Ridiculous. This will take weeks to sort through.
She glared at me while Rick patted my head. And don't get attached to that mutt. I despise dogs almost as much as I despise children.
This isn't a mutt, Lillian. It's a corgi. Mom loved this dog.
Lillian slammed her hands on the table, scaring Rick and me.
Forget it! My head is pounding. I'm going to go lay down. This day has been exhausting for me.
I was grateful when Lillian went into the bedroom.
Don't listen to her, little fella. I'm sure she'll come around in the morning.
Little lines of water trickled down Rick’s face. He looked sad. I felt sad, too. I whined and kissed his hands and he patted my head until he fell asleep. I didn’t leave his side. I was too scared of Lillian.
That day I learned that I can't trust people just because they smell like flowers.
NOVEMBER 20
The next morning, Lillian picked me up and put me in the car before Rick woke up. I was excited to go somewhere new, but a little scared of where Lillian would take me. She didn't seem to like me, no matter how many kisses I tried to give her. We drove for a long time before Lillian said anything. It's not your fault, you know. Loretta never should have gotten a dog at her age. She was never a practical woman. Talking to Rick you would think she was some kind of saint, but she had many flaws.
Lillian continued to say bad things about Loretta. I didn't want to be a good listener now. She was being very mean. I tried covering my ears with my paws, but I could still hear her. Finally, she pulled the car into a dirt road. I looked out the window and could see a small house with a barn behind it. There were no other houses close by. I could hear some dogs from behind the barn, and that got me excited.
Come along, mutt,
Lillian said and grabbed me hard. I wanted to bite her, but I didn't think Miss Loretta would’ve liked it if I did.
A man walked up to us. He had curly hair on his head and hair on his face. I never saw a man with hair on his face before, and it scared me. I growled and showed him my teeth so he wouldn’t think about hurting me.
Oh my goodness! What are you doing, sweetheart? I'm so sorry, Mr. Richland. He's normally such a docile animal.
It’s fine,
the man said and took me from Lillian’s arms. He looked scary, but he held me gently and scratched my throat in my favorite spot. This is a girl, by the way. What's her name?
Lillian stared at the man blankly. Teacup,
she finally answered. That was not what Miss Loretta called me. Miss Loretta always called me Sweetie.
The man laughed. That's a stupid name.
Lillian didn't like that. She said something under her breath and put her sunglasses back on. Well, I'll be on my way.
Wait! Don't you have any of her things? Where are her shot records? What kind of food does she eat?
I must have forgotten them. I'll bring them by this afternoon,
Lillian said as she got in the car. She shut the door, smiled, and waved as she drove away.
Shew, you dodged a bullet there,
the man said, scratching my throat. I'm Mike. Welcome to Wyatt Rescue. We're gonna find you a nice, new family. But first, let's get some breakfast.
I wagged my tail. I hadn't eaten for two whole days. Mike seemed like a nice man, even with his hairy face.
That day I learned you can trust a human even if they have hair on their face.
NOVEMBER 25
Over the next few days, I got used to the farm. Mike liked to talk to me the way Miss Loretta did. It made me miss her a little less. I followed Mike around while he helped the animals around the farm. I think he enjoyed my company as much as I enjoyed his. He even let me stay in his trailer at night. I was the only dog there who was allowed to do that.
You know, I haven't been working here too long myself. You're the first rescue drop-off since I got here, Coco.
That was what he called me. I liked my new name.
There was another person that worked on the farm, Celia. Mike seemed to like her very much. He didn't talk to her often, but he talked about her a lot.
One day she walked up to him after taking care of the horses. Hey, Mike. I need a favor.
Sure. Anything.
Could my daughter, Amelia, come by after school and hang with you for a couple of hours a day? My boss told me she can't stay at the restaurant anymore, and her father is useless. She’s a really good kid. She can help you with whatever you need. I promise she’ll be no trouble at all. I can’t afford to pay you much…
Of course! I love kids. And you don’t have to pay me. I’m happy to help.
Really? That's such a major help, you have no idea. My mom is working every day, and since Grammy had that stroke, Papa is so busy taking care of her I hate to ask him for help. I don't have anyone I can count on.
Well, you've got me.
Mike gave her a huge smile.
Thanks so much. I'll call the school and let them know. I'll pick her up around six!
Mike watched her until she was out of sight, then turned to me. Isn't she cool?
I didn't know what that meant, but from the look on Mike’s face, it must have been a good thing.
Everything about her is perfect. I even love the stuff about her that I can't stand. Like the fact that she blasts country music in here, or how she’s always bossing me around and nagging me for eating junk food. Something is wrong with me.
That was the first day I met Amelia. She ran off of a big bus full of kids and came right to me.
Is that a corgi?!
Mike laughed. Yeah. Her name is Coco. She’s a great dog.
Mommy didn't tell me you guys got a corgi!
She was the smallest person I had ever seen. And she was missing a tooth in the front, so her s’s whistled. Miss Loretta was missing a lot of teeth, but she didn't whistle.
Amelia had so much energy, we ran around for hours. I never had so much fun! I was sad when Celia took her away. I whined at the car while it was driving away, but Mike promised that I would see her again the next day.
That day I learned that little people with missing teeth are the most fun.
NOVEMBER 26
This was a scary day for me. Mike woke me up in the morning and told me that a group of people called a family
were coming to look at me, and maybe take me home. I didn’t know what he meant because I already was at home. Later that day, a car pulled up and a man and woman got out. They seemed nice enough, but then two humans even smaller than Amelia jumped out and ran right at me. They came at me so fast I didn’t have a chance to run away. They looked exactly the same, and had the same clothes on. It was confusing. One of them pulled my ear and the other grabbed my tail. I whined and tried to get away, but the one that had my tail wouldn’t let go.
The man laughed at me and said, Boys! Let go of the doggy. She isn’t ours yet!
Mike rushed over and picked me up. I was thankful that he was there to protect me.
The man poked his hand at Mike and said, I’m Jordan. We spoke on the phone. I’m here to pick up the corgi. I’m assuming this is the one?
Mike frowned at the man, but he took his hand and shook it up and down. I’m Mike. There’s a little more to it than that. We need to make sure you’re a good match.
Oh hell, we’re a perfect match!
Honey! Language,
the woman yelled at Jordan. She held a tiny human, smaller than me. I didn’t know people could get so small. I thought it was cute, but suddenly it let out a screeching sound worse than anything I had ever heard.
Jordan and Mike continued to talk, but I couldn’t understand what they were saying over the piercing screeches of the tiny human.
Finally, the woman got
