About this ebook

#1 There are two factors that have shaped human history in the twentieth century. The first is the development of the natural sciences and technology, which has been a great success story. The second is the ideological storms that have changed the lives of virtually all mankind.

#2 The Russian writers who shaped my outlook were concerned with the roots of injustice, oppression, and moral blindness in the human condition. They believed that solutions to the central problems existed, and that one could discover them with enough selfless effort.

#3 The rational reorganization of society was believed to put an end to spiritual and intellectual confusion, the reign of prejudice and superstition, blind obedience to unexamined dogmas, and the stupidities and cruelties of the oppressive regimes which such intellectual darkness bred and promoted.

#4 The idea that there are timeless truths, and that we can reach them through reason, was the solution to the cosmic jigsaw puzzle. It was the foundation of the perfect life, and it allowed us to understand the rules that governed the universe.

    #1

There are two factors that have shaped human history in the twentieth century. The first is the development of the natural sciences and technology, which has been a great success story. The second is the ideological storms that have changed the lives of virtually all mankind.

    #2

The Russian writers who shaped my outlook were concerned with the roots of injustice, oppression, and moral blindness in the human condition. They believed that solutions to the central problems existed, and that one could discover them with enough selfless effort.

    #3

The rational reorganization of society was believed to put an end to spiritual and intellectual confusion, the reign of prejudice and superstition, blind obedience to unexamined dogmas, and the stupidities and cruelties of the oppressive regimes which such intellectual darkness bred and promoted.

    #4

The idea that there are timeless truths, and that we can reach them through reason, was the solution to the cosmic jigsaw puzzle. It was the foundation of the perfect life, and it allowed us to understand the rules that governed the universe.

    #5

The idea of progress, of history, has meaning if it is not simply a succession of events caused by a mixture of material factors and the play of random selection. If that was the case, there would be no point in trying to move towards a better world.

    #6

I was deeply impacted by the works of Machiavelli, which taught me that not all the world’s supreme values are compatible with one another. I was forced to realize that there can be no conflict between true ends, answers to the central problems of life, and moral standards.

    #7

I came across Vico’s book, which explained how each society has its own vision of reality, and how these visions differ with each other. The values of these cultures are not compatible with one another.

    #8

The view that there are many different ends that men may seek and still be fully rational and men is called pluralism. It is not relativism, which is the belief that there are no values that are common to all cultures.

    #9

There are many objective values that humans pursue for their own sake. These are the ends that men pursue, and other things are means to them. If these ends do not fall within the human horizon, they are outside the human sphere.

    #10

The notion of the perfect whole, in which all good things coexist, is not only unattainable but also conceptually incoherent. We are doomed to choose, and every choice may lead to an irreparable loss.

    #11
