About this ebook

After a long teaching session in the Tampa area, I got on a jet home to San Diego. Being the only passenger in First Class, I had the stew all to myself. As it turned out, she had some interesting ideas of her own.
After joining the Mile High Club, all too soon, the flight was on the ground in Houston, and I needed to change planes to get home to San Diego. We exchanged addresses and phone numbers for what we hoped would be future meetings.
Sadly, it didn't work out that way.
After many attempts on both of our parts, we were never able to hook up again, but it's not for lack of effort, as noted in "The Letter." Things just seemed to conspire against us.
The second half of the book is the dream ... the way I'd have far preferred the story to go, but alas, life didn't work out that way. Life is like that.
Part genuine, part absolute fantasy, it's a fun short story about joining the Mile High Club and a dream about how life could have been.

    Preface

This is a partly true story, part of which actually did happen to me – names have been changed to protect the guilty, but the details happened pretty much the way it’s described.

Well, at least until I got off the plane in Houston. It's been a long time, so if some of the fine details aren't precise, you'll have to forgive me, but then she and I are the only ones who would know for sure.

After leaving the aircraft in Houston, the story is my dream, as stated in my Letter to Janice below.

My fantasy, The Dream, is how I would have preferred life to go, but it didn't. Sometimes life works that way

It may sound as though we didn't try hard enough, but make no mistake, Janice and I tried a multitude of ways to make it work. We were just never able to make a physical meet again. Indeed, some outside circumstances are not discussed here for privacy reasons ... both hers and mine.

I went so far as to ask her to leave her job. I knew that my income could easily support both of us, but had I known it was her passion, I never would have asked. I've always said to kids, find your passion, and become the best at it, and you'll never work a day in your life. She told me that it's something she had always wanted to do, and though it may have seemed to be a spur of the moment decision, it was a lifelong dream.

I would never have forced the issue or given her any kind of ultimatum. That's just not my style. We just continued to make our attempts within the constraints we had. The bottom line is we have lives to live. We wanted to live them with each other, but it wasn't meant to be this time around. Sometimes life just happens that way.

I've still got every letter I ever received from her. All thirty-four of them, each promptly answered, her perfume fading with time, and yes, I still read them on occasion – and weep quietly at what might have been.

I also still have the other item she gave to me. That gift will be buried with me.

I suppose I'm still love sick, but that's just how it is. I make no apologies for my true feelings.

    The Letter

To Janice, whom I hope will somehow see this:

If you see this story Janice (not her real name, but she'll know if she reads the story), please know that I've never given up hope. I lost you after the third trip – the one to Atlanta, where we were supposed to meet again four months after that first meeting.

As seemed to have been our luck, your flight and schedule had changed again at the last minute, and we didn't have the opportunity to hook up. The airline industry is like that, or at least it was in those days. They figuratively owned you, and last-minute changes to a set schedule were the norm rather than the exception. You couldn't plan anything unless you were on a vacation or some other scheduled time off, and even then, they could call you in at the last minute.

When I got back and called, there was no answer for weeks. My letters never came back, and I received answers to all but the last one. I hope I have conveyed to you how deeply I feel about you. Your notes in return seemed to reflect the same passion and the deep frustration in not being able to make things happen. I still have every letter you ever wrote to me ... at least all I ever received. I have all 34 of them.

I guess it was just never meant to be.

On a whim, I took a chance and stopped by your house when I was on the road, but you had already moved, and the landlord said you had changed jobs and airlines suddenly but didn't know which one or exactly where you had ended up. He thought you had relocated to Europe somewhere.

This story is my dream, sweetheart. It's how I would have liked things to work out, and from reading your letters, over and over again, I believe you had the same hope.

Life takes some unexpected turns where we just have to make the best of the hand we're dealt.

Yours and mine seemed to have
