About this ebook

#1 I am blessed among men. I was encouraged by my daughter, Maggie, and my wife, Ellen, while writing this book.

#2 My father, Malachy McCourt, was born in Toome, County Antrim. He grew up wild, in trouble with the English, or the Irish, or both. He fought with the Old IRA and for some desperate act he wound up a fugitive with a price on his head. When I was a child, I would look at my father and wonder why anyone would give money for a head like that.

#3 My mother, the former Angela Sheehan, grew up in a Limerick slum with her mother, two brothers, Thomas and Patrick, and a sister, Agnes. She never saw her father, who had run off to Australia weeks before her birth.

#4 My grandmother’s troubles began the night she was born. She was born with her head in the New Year and her arse in the Old, or was it her head in the Old Year and her arse in the New. She had to write to the Pope to find out what year she was born in.

My father, Malachy McCourt, was born in Toome, County Antrim. He grew up wild, in trouble with the English, or the Irish, or both. He fought with the Old IRA and for some desperate act he wound up a fugitive with a price on his head. #3

My mother, the former Angela Sheehan, grew up in a Limerick slum with her mother, two brothers, Thomas and Patrick, and a sister, Agnes. She never saw her father, who had run off to Australia weeks before her birth.

    #4

My grandmother’s troubles began the night she was born. She was born with her head in the New Year and her arse in the Old, or was it her head in the Old Year and her arse in the New. She had to write to the Pope to find out what year she was born in.

    #5

In New York, Angela met Malachy at a party given by Dan MacAdorey and his wife, Minnie. They liked each other, and soon after, Malachy was arrested for hijacking a truck. Angela was left alone, and her cousins took steps to fix that.

    #6

We noticed that Malachy had an odd manner. It gave us a very uneasy feeling. He was planning to get married, but there was no work and he wouldn’t be able to support a wife.

    #7

Malachy had a difficult time finding work after he was knee-trembled by the MacNamara sisters. He eventually got married and had a child, but he was never able to escape his past.

    #8

The baptism of Malachy’s son was held at Philomena’s house. The priest said that the child was a regular little Baptist now, and hardly needed a priest. Malachy was insulted and wanted to jump the priest, but he was held back by the great-breasted ones and their husbands.

    #9

I had a brother, Malachy, who was born two years after me. My parents were very excited about having another child, but my mother was also very worried about the blood that came from Malachy’s mouth when he was bitten by a dog.

    #10

Malachy was a happy child, but he was also the happiest child in the world because he could laugh and talk. He was always laughing and talking, and his tongue got better with all the laughing.

    #11

When I was four, I was in the playground with my brother Malachy. I was pushing him on the swing, while my friend Freddie Leibowitz was in school. We had to stay in the playground because the twins were sleeping.

    #12

When Dad brings home the first week’s wages, Mam is delighted and can pay the Italian man in the grocery store. She washes the dishes, washes the babies’ diapers, and prepares a big dinner for the family.
