The importance of Muhammad to Muslims is rooted in the Qur’an, the Muslim holy book. He is the supreme example of behavior for Muslims to follow, and his importance to hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide is rooted in the Qur’an.

The quest for the historical Muhammad, while interesting, is not what will determine the course of Islamic history. What will be influential is the figure of Muhammad as he appears in the Qur’an and other accepted Islamic sources.
