CHAPTER 1
THE ATTACK
Bessie Beaver hummed nervously to herself as she bustled along the path on her way to work.
Her eyes were continually searching the sides of the path ahead, and occasionally she reassuringly glanced behind her.
She had walked from her home in Riverside Dwellings to work at Brock Manor countless times before, but today something was different. She could sense something, but could not identify it. She was now the housekeeper at the Manor, but, as she recalled the many happy journeys to and from work, she could not remember ever feeling the eerie feeling she felt today.
It was mid-springtime and the flowers were already out, catching the early morning sunshine. The primroses and clusters of crocuses had shrugged off winter and the trumpets of the golden daffodils heralded in the dawn of a beautiful day.
Ugh! She shuddered, as she remembered those recent long dark winters’ nights, with the paths covered in frost, which had caused her to slip, and fall twice, into the crispy snow, making her all wet and miserable, as well as cold.
