My Search for the Invisible White Man
Hi. My name is Marsha McCormick. Throughout my life I have observed people and come to the conclusion that everyone is searching for a meaningful life of love and forgiveness. But my story, like everyone else’s, includes some personal experiences that don’t match up with that ideal.
Furthermore, I’m afraid this story is going to cause a lot of controversy, but my heart is heavy about this subject and I feel a great need to express it. My purpose is not to offend anyone, but from experience I know people will be offended anyway. So, before you read this, I’ll tell you I’m not a history major and I wasn’t alive during American slavery. Yet I’m very grateful for what people have sacrificed to make this the better world it is today, even though people will say the world is messed up. It depends on who you ask.
I am grateful to be a citizen of the United States of America. I am proud that our motto is In God We Trust.
How awesome it is that God holds the world in His hands! Unfortunately, many people refuse to believe that. This complex world is filled with so many types of people that the human brain has difficulty comprehending the ways of man. God is the only one in the universe who truly understands all human motives, thoughts, words, and actions. Since we don’t understand each other, we have to take the time to learn how to respect and honor one another.
I’ll start off by saying that all my life I have heard about how bad the White Man is. So, even at a young age, my quest became to find this White Man who people told me was destroying their lives. In my search, I encountered a lot of prejudice—and not just among White people. Prejudice exists in every race, and that’s a fact. All you have to do is be at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people, and you’ll encounter hate and evil. It can happen anywhere, including your own home.
I hope my story gives you some insight about growing up in an underprivileged Black neighborhood and finding out the world
thinks you are the scum of the earth and most people don’t want you around. Don’t get me wrong; there have always been other races helping the Blacks, so everyone is not like that. That’s why I say we’ve got to stop stereotyping each other. There are many famous and successful Blacks in the world. I can’t speak for them about who helped them get there, but I can say for myself that several knowledgeable people helped me to become who I am today.
Fortunately, I never had a problem with racial prejudice. I guess it’s because I have always liked to grow in learning. I learned that if I don’t acquire some skill in getting along with other people, it would limit my ability to get the most out of life. In other words, I would be hurting myself.
Many young people stop learning as soon as they leave home, which is tragic because there’s so
