About this ebook

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Book Preview:

#1 Traveling to Europe is not just about passively consuming Europe, but actively participating in it. You must become part of the European ecosystem and adopt their customs and daily rhythms.

#2 The temporary European is empathetic: they assume that other people’s ways make sense to them, and they try to understand why. It requires concerted effort to travel with curiosity and understand those little quirks that make sense to Europeans.

#3 Culture shock is very real, even for those of us who have acquired immunity. I fly from Seattle to Kraków, where I feel most at home, and yet I still have to ease myself into Europe.

#4 The first impression created by an iconic place is so vivid that it becomes tinged with nostalgia even as it occurs: you begin to resist the majesty, and that’s when you get to the good stuff.

    #5

I find my way back to the Square for one of those moments. Under a dreamy purple sky, the monuments glow in decadent floodlights. I toss a few zlotys into the hat and fight a too-wide smile as I head back to my hotel. It has been a long day.

    #6

The Dalmatian Coast is Central Europe’s Vacationland, and Dubrovnik is its touristic capital. It is where Germans, Austrians, Czechs, Hungarians, Slovenes, and many others head for fun in the Mediterranean sun.

    #7

The author visited Dubrovnik and met with the Peros, who rent out rooms to tourists. The author mentioned in his book that the town was full of Rick Steves readers, and the locals began to recognize that they were all in fact Rick Steves readers.

    #8

Dubrovnik is the only place where I need to budget extra time just to socialize. Everyone loves to catch up. Tour guide Roberto de Lorenzo is blessed with an unusual gift for sharing his passion for his hometown.
